let undone ~

age is suited
perfectly
to take the last of me –
a willing breath
wreaks of summertime
memories of all
everything
I came to find
pieces stitched together
let undone
who will notice
who will claim
mercies more than doubt
of days before
the end was known –
places dreamed about
who shall mourn
as nights grow long –
the pastures dressed
in snow
who will speak my name
aloud –
when the ground is
hard and cold

ruby reds ~

before the bloom
became of dreams –
meadows without end
fraught with yellows
denim blue
and bark
before the sun
recalled in death
the sanctity of time –
was tempt to spin
hastened by the dark
who am I
can you forgive
what of me was less
a cotton robe
dirty soles
ruby reds to kiss
before the bloom
was sacrificed
perfume filled the air
pastures bathed in splendor –
with nothing to
compare

a path beneath the rain ~

what of this
take it all
make it yours somehow
free my hands
by lightning scored
tho who could trace them now
spare this kiss
that bears your name
your tears –
a summer storm
make of years
a path beneath the rain
close the boxes
turn away
leave this life behind
steal my letters
take the land –
the breath that once
held mine

collecting ~

what evidence
remains –
a ring upon my table
the faintest scent
of smoke
within my hair
a shadow burned
from down the hall –
edges I can’t see
reminders
of a lifetime
everywhere
poetry
fills my bed
begged you once
to leave
I’m not the same
nightbirds nest within
weightless
as a memory
familiar discontent –
dust collecting
just beneath my skin

ache ~

from slumber
I am taken –
lest my dreams
return for me
lest my covers ache
the essence
of my sin
when the moon is perched
along the southern eve
let him weep
let him find me distant
find me gone
succumb to all was
missing –
surrendered not to fate
one more day
I dare not spend it now
steal me from
the cool embrace
of sheets just off the line
shatter my
allegiance
to the night

fireflies ~

once I prayed
my gypsy ways
would find me in a tent
sweating rhyme-
civility betrayed
swirling madly
laughter bending
with every pulse of light
magic come to steal
my breath
away

fortunes writ
in charcoal –
signed my fate somewhere
gathered up my leaving
blew away
to find you there
dancing neath the timbers
a gypsy firefly
willing me
your company –
as wings recalled
to flight

beneath a sigh ~

who shall mourn
the poet –
when poetry relents
the reader since
forgotten how to feel
who shall know
what loss is penned
just beneath a sigh
how many lovers grieved
for time to heal

who shall tell
the children
of magic left to make –
where the proof was found
and who remains
who shall man the tower
as witness offered up –
a parting kiss
reminding us
the first we knew
to love

fortune ~

would that I
this moment trade
for lives I’ve yet to know
exchanging fate
for one more ache
than e’er my birth foretold
as lines were crossed
and lines erased –
before
the same was met
fishers where the heart
was sworn to be
warmth where light
became of love –
my favorite
destiny

. . .

across a sea ~

this scar
defies surrender
a place I met your eyes
across a sea –
nameless
battlefields
with hurts the same
to hurt me now
moments buried
deep –
for every kiss
some other has grown cold
awaiting us another
would clear a life beyond
ending not
as truth we dared
become
this scar
it won’t forgive
the taste of bitter smoke
a war
I’ve not forgotten
took my heart
and claimed
your soul

solace ~

what feelings
will tomorrow bear
when I return to dust –
the path we wandered
helplessly –
hands becoming one
will someone seek
the answers –
as tender years unfold
will verses speak
to lovers
seeking solace
from this load
with time so short
sometimes unfair –
grant me this goodbye
that I might memorize
the ways we came
grant me nothing more
than one more kiss –
a final breath
made sweeter by
your name
