another life, home we never left, love, remembering, star crossed, time, witness to eternity

As promise given
soul to soul –
as sunlight to the shadows –
would for the truth
I burst into a flame –
and leave my mark of cinder –
charcoal
memories etched –

How could I know
the rest of me
was you

Before the past
is ever passed
as futures to uncover –
a moment there
pretending not to be –
A breath in time
but I confess
forever stretched to fill it –
leaving thought
to guard the days
between

Eternity –
a place began
by whispers sworn to silence
Dare I speak
and hear your voice again

Words can never garner
a story so familiar –
you close your eyes
and I resign to sleep

once I prayed
my gypsy ways
would find me in a tent
sweating rhyme-
civility betrayed
swirling madly
laughter bending
with every pulse of light
magic come to steal
my breath
away

fortunes writ
in charcoal –
signed my fate somewhere
gathered up my leaving
blew away
to find you there
dancing neath the timbers
a gypsy firefly
willing me
your company –
as wings recalled
to flight

of stars
I have forgotten
– hands
that fit the same
a compass once beholding
set in clay
was given up to rust
and stripped of destiny –
rivers swim
beyond our shores
oceans none can see
there are no maps
of circumstance
heaven help me now
I cannot hear
the night birds
lest they call
fading into forests
becoming one I knew –
a path
between forevers –
a night beyond
the blue

fell together ~

breath, fate, history, let me, morning, remembering, seasons, stars, story, time, truth

we fell together
one night in march
when winds still warned
of an aching heart
you went home
and I pretending
of another day
we’d fall again

last night I slept
in a field of sand –
eighteen miles
of forgotten land
married you somewhere
in between
our first goodbye
and a place of dreams

you made plans
of a life beyond
the getting over –
the getting on
I sewed stars
from last night’s sleep
never worried long
for one to keep
faceless names
and ageless babies –
years between
the time we made
beneath the dark
of winter sky
another day
one more goodbye

one more hello
and a field remembers
seeds put down
one late September
for every dawn
there’s another sun
never meant to cheat
the road we’re on

faceless names
and ageless babies –
years between
the time we made
you make breakfast
and I’ll sleep in –
wrapped in stories
we fall again

. . .

blessing, closer to forever than the stars, eternity, home, light, love, memory, nearer, remembering, soul, truth, witness

just beyond the branches reach
beyond the furthest light –
I remember well a reef
of diamond shards –
a single arm reaching out
into the vast unknown
cradled as we were
against the stars

waters swirled around us
sands were washed away –
oceans fell their sorrows
at our knees
poetry was written
with ne’er a thought to rhyme –
carried by the tide
into the sea

the moon was still our friend
embers before dawn –
angels wept for worlds
beyond our own
traces of eternity
still shine beyond the trees –
awaiting our remembrance
to be known

when I’ve forgotten
will you promise
to carry all I love
into another day –
another life

when I’ve let the image go
of the oak
outside my door –
the smell of wood smoke
drifting through the pines

will you carry
will you tarry –
a moment more for me
when I’ve forsaken
every proof
of time

will you reminisce
as I have now –
on places I was loved
on dreams
I hope you dream
enough to find

a place apart
from everything –
a light where there are none
solace in these
memories
of mine

places I belong ~

wild and free #1

I spoke into the silence
of an ancient winter wind –
I gave of every secret
willingly
assured of her allegiance
far beyond my dismal days
– would gather
me across eternity

names I have surrendered
the taste of memory –
remnants of a language
once I knew
making my confession
to an everlasting love
– endearing me to places
wild and true

I wonder where she whispers
to the mountains
to the shore –
with graces not so different
from my own
a valley grown with purple sage –
a garden’s rich perfume
– carries me to places
I belong

. . .

sweet in recollection ~

awakened, dreams, listening, love, remembering, soul memory, spirit, truth

in my dreams

how many nights
far too many
beyond my need for sleep
drifting in and out
of slumber –
miles to go
with none to keep

songs are playing
I can hear them –
near enough to wake the soul
verses sweet
in recollection
move my weary heart
to fold

ill regard
for lifetimes bartered –
on this crazy dream
of mine
how many sunsets
unremembered
will I find

will I find

. . .

a secret passed in dying ~

trustme

I won’t wait
the evening brush
of clarinet to fiddle –
I won’t deny your leaving
for some other
grace undone

they say
for one
another waits
beyond the rest –
a sweeter sun

yet I have yet to understand
how deep the burn ignites

through it all
a whispered sigh
was a secret passed in dying
dare I wait the coming back –
for the sweet embrace
of light

here –
and I
some other day
will recall the truth
this life betrayed
ten thousand loves –
as trade for one

ten thousand breaths
in flight

. . .

daylight burns
ten thousand sins
tho not a one
for good
prayers I’ve saved
as loves unnamed
yet there against the rub
of one more day
one more sigh
wet upon my tongue
locust croon a favored song
– as I’m remembered
home
