of stars
I have forgotten
– hands
that fit the same
a compass once beholding
set in clay
was given up to rust
and stripped of destiny –
rivers swim
beyond our shores
oceans none can see
there are no maps
of circumstance
heaven help me now
I cannot hear
the night birds
lest they call
fading into forests
becoming one I knew –
a path
between forevers –
a night beyond
the blue

sweet
the quietude becoming
ashes blown
now blue
the moon
recalled to breath
another summer
a long cold porch
leaving soon
the memory
of goodbye

cometome

stilled was I
a moment longer
than e’er my tender soul could spare
than e’er my heart
undone by breaking –
could find anew the will to bear

eternities
began and stranded
within the want for one more day
within the swell
of breath surrendered –
as promise come from faraway

a name returned –
from silent keeping
defies the watch of space and time
where once a kiss –
another waiting
as evidence of faith divine

RedAs much as I might claim otherwise, I sometimes find myself ‘drifting’ through days – life and memories, back and forth between the past and present, and quite often into an improbable future.

At times, my absence is hardly noticed; at others, the person to miss my presence most is me.

Mornings are my favorite time for traveling.

In the hour it takes me to get to work, I can traverse years, miles and lifetimes.  There are no calls to make, so I drive without much distraction, often arriving at work with no clear remembrance of passing the post office or picking up coffee.  Some might call it multi-tasking of another kind altogether.

It’s what I do, and suspect I’m not alone in my comings and goings.

Yet now and again, I am pulled from my reverie by the most unlikely of culprits. One such diversion is a dear friend I call Red. Red is a hawk that sits atop the powerline, just at the point where my country road turns to the highway. While I’d love to think he watches for me, I suspect he’s perched with a clear view of nearby fields while awaiting breakfast.

On days he isn’t there, I imagine him soaring over other fields, or dividing spoils among a nest of open mouths.

But when he is there, he is a sweet reminder, a gentle pull backward from the edge of nothing into the moment where glory resides.

Of all I could waste, let not this moment be lost.

I’ve seen you there
awaiting tides –
that I might turn
to find you
perched above the altar
to my soul

friend

plant me
in the warmest spot
where sunlight spills to earth
face me north
and spread my branches
wide
sing that I might
recognize
the ancient rites of wind
that I might feel
the whispers
sweet glad tidings
of the night

snare me
with your ribbons
your cares of yesterday
keep me
as the place you come
to pray
in silence
let me witness
the musings of your soul –
dress me up
with stories
never told

share me
with rememberings
of once a noontide kiss
a late night tear
when no one knew
to listen
a moonlight dance
of sweet embrace
welcoming your sighs
as branches bent
to shield you
from the echoes
of goodbye

surrenderme

what silent
loneliness could steal
the mysteries of life
solitude
where joys are known to play
who says we shan’t remember
or think beyond
to this
another time
some other sunny day
for all is well
we carry on
and take with us
our lowly best
of love we’ve given
love we’ve known
our eulogy –
our rest

when quiet falls
against your world
in the midst
of an everyday ~
do you wander
to a place
beyond your dreams

do you lie awake
til morning comes
unaware of the restlessness
that wears against
eternity
it seems

do you recollect
the way it was ~
a feeling
the same as then
does love remain
the proof of a life
redeemed

floating_petals

in the quiet still
none can own
few or less aware
oceans slide
beneath a silver foam
secrets sworn
for keeping –
lest my ancient vigil fail
and mountains crumble
silent to the shale
remembered yet
tho not so far
along the shore we came
– casting seeds
to blossom
here we are

held in place ~

justasIknew

in the cool dense
where sunlight spreads
across my winter bed
words are left
to whispers on the night
memories
and all that was
before the same again
names so rarely spoken
– now a sigh

of once upon a spring
bouquet
we knew before we knew
as shadows cast
by honeysuckle vine
hands to fit
where heros lay –
promise feels the same
as one to love
held in place
divine

silent here
as essence gathers
dew upon the grass
willows weep
the pines asleep
as morning stirs at last

to sit a while
in waiting
lest I pray
the hours slow
were nights my only want
in letting go

dreamless now
the faultless fall
of day
upon my skin
as berry bright
the sun
peeks through
again

fearful
of forgiveness
to love with all my might
barefeet warm
against the board –
in reverence
for the light

to find the right title for this

well – the ease
