for a moment
(or a lifetime)
I forgot the way to breathe
the means to speak
I can’t recall
my name
was there before
I heard you
(whisper
me to life)
your fingers on
my pulse
forever (one more
time)
as if it were the only
my name betrayed
your voice
(echoes) of my heart
trapped
beneath your skin
breathed
(a sigh forgotten)
save for this
. . .
26 Saturday Mar 2022
how much of you
a part of me –
sands atop
the floor
as blossoms
where the trees have
burned away
how much of verse
is nothing more
than once
you were
and I
was counted back
in syllables
emptied to a page
folded to
a memory
the lineage of truth
someone said
tho I’ll be damned
if I remember why
the road
was less
the day you left
the sun no longer shines
to fill between
the whispers
rusted oak and flesh
how much I have
surrendered
was your breath
becoming mine
. . .

all I really know, in this now, life, love, redemption, surrender, trust, truth
had i more of verse
than consequence
an offer
much refined
more than just
one kiss
another me
was waiting
recognition –
in the shadow
of a smile
a lifetime resurrected
by will
of destinies
had i more to gift
– of everything
these arms could ever hold
fortunes
spent before
you came
for me

had i known
my fervent whisper
might reach beyond
the veil
beyond the break
where sunlight fills
your eyes
had i sensed
your permission
as you strolled
beneath the boughs
courted by the shadows
in a world
of here and now
had i known
you were missing
everything
i miss of you
as breath
against my shiver
– resurrecting
every truth
had i known
this day would come
anew
tho never quite
the same
as the first you heard
me whisper –
the first i spoke
your name
. . .
12 Tuesday Oct 2021
had I more
than stars for wishing
years of standing still
the memory
of falling to the sea
where I slept
within a sunrise
as ten thousand came before
swimming in your eyes
rescue me
had I will
to run or follow –
a step or two behind
beyond the pull
of destiny or sky
tempted by a promise
truth would see me home
lest I wander with
this mystery
called life
had I courage
for surrender –
death to stave again
carried up as leaves
to lay me down
had I faith
to live another life
were this my only plea
come to me
with arms
to wrap around
. . .
29 Sunday Aug 2021
as mornings
where the light is come
to spill across
my bed
faded cotton folded
holy praise
here the boards
are broken
tho one shall know
my steps –
a dance recalled to
memory that way
slanted doors
and rusted hinges
still I pull
you in
pressed against my ache
yesterday
of chances
I’ve forgotten
where I left my heart
who the stars
remember
to obey
. . .

infrom the end
another started –
a place was ours before
tho pieces have
been lost along the way
neglected to my keeping
trusted far too much
hidden in a box
buried deep
ancient hieroglyphics
carved into these walls
music plays
some nights
to drive me mad
heaven understands
how prayers have gone awry
every plan for getting home –
a flaw
jaded by a promise
to keep my heart for you
cheated by the sounding
of the clock

inthese arms
resist the morning
when daylight breaks anew –
attempts to hold
what can’t be held –
a flame that burns
clear through
the haunted taste of promise
still lingers on these lips –
a plea surrendered
softly –
as the moon
became a kiss
evidence I waited
and all I dared concede –
drifting at the edges
dreams –
won’t let me be
these hands
are stiff with longing
for paradise they know
passage given
let me in –
a torture letting go
