a life
resurrected
for a moment like this
to find then of dreams
i survived
to remember my place
a smoldering flame
to recall
how your hand
fit with mine
a silence
made sweet
by the essence of voice
were so many things
left unsaid
flirts with my need
deserved of my touch
like a story
made over
one telling too much
i can dream
to remember
how it was just before
my window fell open
my heart
wanting more –
you were come
without wishing
hesitation forgot
to the way the world
curled
in my fingers

found, life, love, poet, story, truth

pages lay empty
at the edge of my pen
waiting this fragile
heart to reveal
what was mine
what is left
of places we loved
a sweet revelation –
i remember it
still

stirred
by desire
assured of my fate
tho lies have been known
to tarry me now
as the first chill
of winter
carries me back
to a time i was lost –
to the place
i was found

what was left
of the creek
has turned into dust
(was here
i once held up the night)
was right here
beside you
covered with dew
assessing the stars
(wishes in flight)
was heaven this close
(i scarce can recall)
how sweet was your love
on my skin –
venus made nest
in a handful of curls
words seeking silence
again
(and again)
tell me once more
how swiftly the waves
to carry us far
from this place where we lay
how cool were
the oceans –
(created from dust)
to hold what was left
(to the story)
of us

all we've known to love, loving, perpetual grace, sometimes, story, time, truth, witness

was a time
you were waiting
the first alarm to ring
would pull me
from my dream
into your arms
into the warmth of sunrise
burning me your skin
restless in our
promise
to begin
wrapped inside
a silence –
the measure of a sigh
intimacy
with barely room
to breathe
touch is come
reminders
of the night we’ve
passed beyond
forgotten now
the fleeting thought
to leave

confession is
a gentle ghost –
warmed against my lips
a name
no longer tasted
but for nurture
of a lie
what worries
have I witnessed
what threats to tenderness
angry words
a sinner cast aside
I cannot breathe
I will not leave
the best of me
behind
chastened for the want
of paradise

barter, blessing, comfort, grace, home, love, morning where I am found, sometimes, story

secreted away
as the eldest daughter
of a favored son
a will that gave
away the farm
was never mine to give
how much of these
were pardon
for the ways I am
with you
how much I gave
without a thought
of all there was
to lose
morning sits
beyond the frost
as sure is warmth
to come
carried by
the wondering of
who was I before
a sideways glance
to alter fate
a cloud to hide
the moon
more than this
as heaven here –
evidence
of truth

a hand to hold, a name upon my lips, always we begin, belonging to none, home, life, love the only truth, story

for moments
unaccounted –
a lifeline strung along
love awaited
past pretension
not to worry
at your wrongs –
your ways
a plea becoming
words I wait
the night to hear
touch I crave
this one and
only –
you were come
and love was here
in the cool
beneath my pillow
shadows
folded into dawn
moments
time became
illusion
when your touch
became
my song

could be
all i need
is forever to surrender
another dawn
to rise
within your arms

could be
all i need
is a way
for getting over
eternity to wash
ash to snow

could be
all i need
is a sigh beneath
my shiver
breath upon the fire
i made my home

breaths between eternities, death, life, love, memorial, memory, moments, soul, story, time

I recently attended a memorial service for my aunt, who has spent the last nine months in some state of ‘coming home’ – from Salt Lake City to Tennessee. It was a wonderful time for sharing stories and memories. And while we might have shared some of them back in March, I found an advantage in the delay – memories and stories unencumbered by the immediate weight of grief.

For me, it meant I could share funny stories without breaking down, speak without a catch in my voice. In response to one story of my uncle’s driving, I noticed at least ten people actually in tears from laughing so hard. My aunt would have loved it!!!!

The minister whispered to me afterward, “I’m growing quite fond of these delayed events.” Maybe it’s the storyteller in me, but I believe it’s because they come at a time when memories aren’t part of what breaks us, but rather part of what is saving us. Perhaps it’s another lesson in perspective, viewing truths through a more compassionate eye.

Personally, I think we could use a bit more of that.

when blue
my ashes fall
on meadows far from here
or drift atop a wave
deep and grey
remember me
another time –
as a wind I came
to you
whispers of forever
given you to save

for graces
I’ve forgotten –
blessing without shame
paths I took
another day –
delivered me
the same

tho now my heart
is loosened
by the weight of
yesterdays
love I held much longer
than choice
to give away

of starry nights
loving arms –
gifted by design
mornings when
another sun
broke through –
a moment of forever
holy mine

a sacred truth
is written here –
to my soul
and on my face
hands I’ve held
names I keep –
as evidence
of grace
