I’ve lost track
and recollection
of where I left my keys –
and just last night
I realized I’d forgotten
how to dream
so much
we’ve forsaken
is remembered not the same
the winds are turning
but they still know
my name
I listen for the nightbirds –
so much sweeter than the news
reminding me of other times
and how it hurts to lose
everything I surely needed
like those keys
like my heart
like places we’ve forgotten
how to start

. . .

never changed ~

dreams, easy, home, journey, life, locks, love, morning, seasons, story, time, trust, waiting since you left, welcome in

I’ve been waiting
out the winter –
for another sweet hello
as headlights press
the darkness like a ghost
there’s a map
inside my dresser –
silver lines against the blue
doesn’t matter
where we start
if I’m with you

my faith
is resurrected –
at the whisper of your name
a sigh of signs
and still my heart obeys
I can’t recall
the reasons
or how many roads
between
all I know is
all I need
to breathe again

the locks were never changed
to fit another
no plans for getting on
for getting by
don’t let the time it takes
be all that matters –

the sun still waits
all morning
for the night

. . .

weight of words ~

always we begin, and still, belonging to none, grace, life, longing, love, poet, story, time, verse, writing

another sun
will I remember
the weight of words
beneath my bed –
empty pages
grieve the story
verses trapped inside
my head

passions rise
to ink stained fingers
memory met
with practiced hand –
seasons fill
my pen with longing
for life I’m want
to understand

truth is cleft
as will surrendered
stored to cold
my pillow waits –
another time
a chance for taking
as heart to hand
– this silence
aches

. . .

all that matters ~

confession, dreams, lessons, life, love, memory, moments, sometimes, soul start, story, trade

til I am faded
into pitch –
the memory of touch
almost erased
with no one to remember
why it was
or what it meant
how deep the soul’s
surrender
to something deeper still
written to the places
love has been

I’ve made my peace
had my say
with verses
o’er the years –
tempted fate more times
than were confessed
borrowed
from the ledger
of tomorrows left to spare
gave my love at times
for something less

a name
almost forsaken
awakes from tired dreams
to warm against
the heart –
with all that matters
a silent recollection
of days
beyond our count
and nights
we waited long
the morning after

. . .

fell together ~

breath, fate, history, let me, morning, remembering, seasons, stars, story, time, truth

we fell together
one night in march
when winds still warned
of an aching heart
you went home
and I pretending
of another day
we’d fall again

last night I slept
in a field of sand –
eighteen miles
of forgotten land
married you somewhere
in between
our first goodbye
and a place of dreams

you made plans
of a life beyond
the getting over –
the getting on
I sewed stars
from last night’s sleep
never worried long
for one to keep
faceless names
and ageless babies –
years between
the time we made
beneath the dark
of winter sky
another day
one more goodbye

one more hello
and a field remembers
seeds put down
one late September
for every dawn
there’s another sun
never meant to cheat
the road we’re on

faceless names
and ageless babies –
years between
the time we made
you make breakfast
and I’ll sleep in –
wrapped in stories
we fall again

. . .

evermore to spend ~

longing
paints a picture
with colors still I bleed
crimson red raspberry
melon sweet
harbingers
of stories rent
lessons yet to learn
lives are reconstructed
over tea

promise
I was sworn to keep
with words
forgotten now
whispers of a truth
I put away
are breathed anew each morning
and folded into rhyme –
evermore to spend
another day

moments
gather silent
in dust beneath my bed
circles to the table
souvenirs
of seasons
unremembered
before I knew your name –
lives I traded
just to find you here

. . .

if you are going ~

take me with
if you are going
somewhere closer to the sun –
where a lonely ache
for living
shall carry us
as one

a story
not yet written –
bears the memory of change
so I’ll hold your hand
for whatever truth
remains

let it keep
beyond the leaving
for all the world to see
how it was
the path remembered
as you waited time
for me

. . .

again ~

echoes beneath my skin, home, life, love, moments, remember me, sometimes, soul speak, story, time, touch, trust, truth, woman

I break
when least expected –
and rise against my will
sometimes I race
sometimes I’m standing still
I’ve known the hurt
of heartbreak
the salty sting of tears
how long the morning after
when after all these years
I still recall
without regret –
most every goodbye kiss
the whisper of remember me
to moments such as this
hearts entreating
music stirring just beneath
my skin
as melodies we played
are played again

. . .

all we knew of love ~

another day, becoming me, faith, journey, life, love, reflection, story, truth

I feel the blush
of a million sighs
whene’er I walk this road
as witness to the place
I go alone

when comes the blaze
of afternoon –
shades I recognize
are laced between the branches
falling round

reminders of another time
was all we knew of love –
sycamore and maple
spinning down

silence rings
in memories –
as close to now was then
whispers falling
echoes met by stone
one hundred years of living
reflected in your eyes
lifetimes come –
ten thousand
dusty roads

. . .

of every moment made ~

breath, comfort, counted days, love, memory, moments, sometimes, soul, spirit, story, surrender, time, truth, why we came

mercy finds us
sorely tempted –
at the end of letting go
clinging
as the final light
to fade

tis then
within our darkness
we remember why we came
and what is left
of every moment
made

regardless
our surrender –
or the lack of one to give
days are counted
back to us
the same

as keepers
sworn to memory
gifted us this way
as lifetimes
recollected
by name
