heaven here, home, journey, life, love, nature, poet, rest, stars, time, words

all i want
of heaven
is the memory
of spring –
nights somewhere
we lay amid the stars
tracing lives
giving name
wherever flame
was found –
whispering our secrets
every promise
breathed
aloud

all i want
of evermore –
is a place to rest
my pen
fields of ancient flowers
fireflies
a story undecided
words no one has heard
moments we surrendered –
floating
far beyond
the night

. . .

as you were dreaming ~

i wonder how it is
i know
to breathe the same
air where
oceans settled
over memory and slate
blue has found
redemption
in a softer shade of grace
i recall sometimes
your eyes
as you were dreaming
shores where once I carried you
away

. . .

places long imagined ~

were not for once
you wondered
who I was
and why I came
from places
long imagined
but never said
aloud
in passing –
lest your fingers
be tempted by the red
to begin
an undertaking –
an explorer
undecided where to land
how many streams
for crossing
might delay
your sweet return
to a place
you had forgotten
how to be

. . .

unsubstantial ~

always on my way, courage, days, distance, home, journey, life, love, miles, pilgrimage, stars, truth, witness, worth

what longing
might I best defend
as distance
unsubstantial
winding roads
lines across between
rivers
here I left my tears
forests I surrendered
a mile or two
beyond this best I know
time has folded over
the map that is my heart
til nothing
short of silence
feels the same
garnered by permission
to go
as once I came
before the dawn
an ageless earth –
endless virgin seas
countless intersections
stars to see me home
memories
to grace the days
between

. . .

breath for breath ~

age, gifts, home, journey, life, love, memory, seasons, time, truth, what we keep

were there signs
we failed to notice
edges faded gray
words we lost in speaking
as hearts for others
paid

other lives
we left forsaking
what might be our last goodbye
what might wait
beyond the sunset
coral wings
against the night

without fault
without remembrance
lest our days be counted less
than a moment
life was traded –
soul for soul
breath for breath

were there signs
we gave each other
memory carved into the soul
touching places
we were lovers –
coming home
and letting go

. . .

burned to cinder ~

blessing, journey, passage, promise, seasons, spirit memory, time, trust, what we keep

until the end
of all we’ve gathered
this my vow
i make to thee
to free my heart
of every wanting –
love that not a tear
shall ease

until the sun
is burned to cinder
spreading heat
across the day
I shall lie awake
til morning –
to pull you in
and beg you stay

until my lips
are words forsaken
coldest night
in which we sleep
I shall dream
your arms around me –
as heaven here
my soul
will keep

. . .

enough to reconsider ~

death, dirt road, grace, gravel roads, home, journey, love, memory, pilgrimage, southern, spirit, that thing I do, time, weath

thirty miles
is not so far
tho less along the fences
lines already drawn
from heart to home
the road curves back
beside a creek
I remember once you held me –
the water was so cold
I cried for days

there’s a weathered bridge
a leaning barn
winter wheat and locust
boxes stand as one
their flags aloft
afternoons
the sun wears low
enough to reconsider
how many loves
forsaken to this road

cadillacs
and beat up trucks –
drift along the shoulder
pass without a curse
without a pause –
a fleeting recognition
of someone
once you loved
can’t see the tears
beyond the years
can’t say I’ve had enough
of honeysuckle
gravel roads
heaven spread before

weeds have bound
my thirsty heart
to yours

thirty miles
is not so far
lest I lose my way –
wait the creek to rise
would take me home

. . .

which way ~

all I know, find me, journey, life, love, mystery, questions, searching, sometimes, spirit, time, truth

how far
from where you left me –
are there traces to be found
broken twigs
whispers
marks upon the ground

places
I may find you –
lest I search beyond the veil
for the path you took
and there my heart
as well

branches bent
to block the sun –
winter wheat to ash
no one keeps your memory
and I can’t bear to ask

which way
the moon will follow
to find a promise made
past the barn
down the night –
another once we lay

how far
from where you left me
are there traces to be found

. . .

sunday after all ~

a light on the porch, carry me home, forgotten path, journey, life, love, memory, time

the path is worn
as if o’er time –
the way might be erased
tho flowers bloom each Sunday
after all
midnight yearns
and I have learned –
tis not for me to squander
the hope for one more
morning –
wherever promise falls

each time
I think I might be gone
I find the door ajar –
locks once held the windows
rusted now
lights I thought would never burn
stream a golden pasture
echoes ring
remember me –
should e’er your heart
allow

. . .

never changed ~

dreams, easy, home, journey, life, locks, love, morning, seasons, story, time, trust, waiting since you left, welcome in

I’ve been waiting
out the winter –
for another sweet hello
as headlights press
the darkness like a ghost
there’s a map
inside my dresser –
silver lines against the blue
doesn’t matter
where we start
if I’m with you

my faith
is resurrected –
at the whisper of your name
a sigh of signs
and still my heart obeys
I can’t recall
the reasons
or how many roads
between
all I know is
all I need
to breathe again

the locks were never changed
to fit another
no plans for getting on
for getting by
don’t let the time it takes
be all that matters –

the sun still waits
all morning
for the night
