gift me
with your darkness
shadows where you live
stories you’ve forgotten
how to tell
wherever you are missing
I shall give the same –
beauty in the fracture
hurts I cover
well
trust these arms
to fold you –
I can bear it all
swim within the ocean
of my tears –
honor me the presence
of your fall

do you remember me
a lily
tall beneath the pines
the scent of easter sundays
long ago
a push where you
were not so used to being
lest I stay –
a path beyond the only place
we know

do you remember
how you loved me –
how i love you still
despite the tides
the rise of ancient winds
do you remember
how it was
with nothing to compare
lifetimes gone –
and I am there
again

a place apart
where living stalled
eternity
a sigh
I found you
as you found me –
as breath
beneath the pines

I went looking
for the verses
before they searched
for me –
miles beneath
a canopy of stars
pushed along
when everything was
telling me to go
sometimes the morning came
and I was gone
I’ve watched
the way unravel
and stitched it back
in place
told myself some lies
to get me on
etched a map of evermore
and covered it
with skin
sold myself
sold the world
for one more time
begin
I’m not so young
as I was then
save for memories
traded on a future –
none could own
none could see
as poems prayed –
eyes were closed
to everything but us
I felt my heart the most
within your love

a solemn prayer
a bumble bee or wasp
the smile to break apart
against your sigh
ancient recognition
warmth exceeding warmth
a feeble cry
braced against the night
were that I
the best of times
the truth in all you know
a tattoo of my need
to match your own
every kiss
the taste of me
muscadine and flame
rivers
cold and reckless
remember me
the same

I’ve no pride
but what I wear
no greed
I can implore
as evidence you loved me
I have none
no ash to sprinkle
time to mourn
a lock to slow your hand
I dare not trim
the light
or move away
the road
that serves apologies
is missing from
my love
tho I am not so far
that I can’t see
that I don’t feel you
in the morning
while making up my bed
remnants of a dream
were come
to stay

a place remembered –
a touch I defended
long past goodbye
a breath
unafraid
this becoming to rent
this wondrous remission
of time
will e’er I know
what words could not bear
what lies would not keep
from the truth
a vow made to shadow
and brushed onto skin –
felt by the moon
by the stars
one more day

you remain –
alone within my country
as one within the pounding
a legion formed
of heart
given one good reason
for words
no one could answer
a language
only I
could understand
of moments
you a prisoner
to the memory of missing
a sacred land
once charted
by your hands
of moments
would another do –
or ever be the same
a reason for belonging
once you loved
once you knew –
a story undivided
a place beyond the fight
language passed
without the fault
of sound
