inhad i nothing
but one more ache –
another poem come of this
ashes swirl beyond the meadow
leaves returning
a golden bliss
silence fills
an almost whisper
breezes brush the tallest pines
remembered not
to indecision –
other worlds where stars align
bid me go
or let me linger –
will this earthly heart to slow
across and back
this everafter –
is home to every
love i’ve known
. . .
14 Thursday Jul 2022
my head has no say
in these things that I keep
the touch I allow
when the night
falls to sleep
when night birds are restless
I feel with my heart
every sigh
for repeating –
tis a place
where we start
at the eve of forever
where again
we are new
my head has no say
when reaching
for you
my heart still remembers
what my head
can’t recall –
how we loved
past the season
once was ours
once was all
. . .
25 Saturday Jun 2022
i begged my heart
surrender
to the absolute of time
nights without you
cradled in my arms
i bartered peace
a place
would lay me down
to let you go
years before your soul
remembered mine
verses fall
weary
from hands
that knew you well –
curtains float
as whispers to the breeze
all i have
is no more than a store
of yesterdays
a season uninvited
silver cords
and silent pleas
. . .

insometimes
my heart is broken
in the time it takes to bleed
for moments
there –
i can’t see the sun
was surely meant
to resurrect
the memory of us –
another chance
the universe is come
to heed again
my softest plea
aches
I cannot say
I miss the night
dreams it leaves behind
to reminisce
on places I’ve forgotten
how to grieve –
weighted now
in love we’ve yet
to find
. . .

incoincidence
has taught me well
the tenderness
of falling
sapphire blue horizons
pastures green
language
of another birth
a mother such as mine
carried me
buried me –
stayed the years
between
a sweet terrain
my body still
creates her destiny
abandoned maps
and loves
they couldn’t stay
a faithful moon
grieves alone –
the girl I used to be
forgotten roads
my soul has
worn away

inI recently attended a memorial service for my aunt, who has spent the last nine months in some state of ‘coming home’ – from Salt Lake City to Tennessee. It was a wonderful time for sharing stories and memories. And while we might have shared some of them back in March, I found an advantage in the delay – memories and stories unencumbered by the immediate weight of grief.
For me, it meant I could share funny stories without breaking down, speak without a catch in my voice. In response to one story of my uncle’s driving, I noticed at least ten people actually in tears from laughing so hard. My aunt would have loved it!!!!
The minister whispered to me afterward, “I’m growing quite fond of these delayed events.” Maybe it’s the storyteller in me, but I believe it’s because they come at a time when memories aren’t part of what breaks us, but rather part of what is saving us. Perhaps it’s another lesson in perspective, viewing truths through a more compassionate eye.
Personally, I think we could use a bit more of that.
when blue
my ashes fall
on meadows far from here
or drift atop a wave
deep and grey
remember me
another time –
as a wind I came
to you
whispers of forever
given you to save
. . .
01 Friday Oct 2021
when hearths
are warmed
by who we are
beyond the wait
where lanterns sway
beneath an ancient dark
evermore to waste
as time
we could not give
locks already failed
secrets bound together
by the ways
of which we came
had you known
of truths I carried –
a chair beside my bed
a hope
already seated
with my soul
leaving yet to suffer
memory to fill
save for me
a place you love
to love
. . .

these hands
have nurtured promise
and still
they let you go –
were not a lack
of privilege
to love you so
garnered fate –
feared your heart
might change the weight
of life –
prayed when there was
nothing
to defend
these hands
they’ve earned
the right to feel –
graced
a tender land
yearned for one last
mystery
with grace to
understand
you were mine
and I was here –
who shall write the rest
caught within your
wishes –
warmed beneath
your breath
