breath, fate, history, let me, morning, remembering, seasons, stars, story, time, truth

we fell together
one night in march
when winds still warned
of an aching heart
you went home
and I pretending
of another day
we’d fall again

last night I slept
in a field of sand –
eighteen miles
of forgotten land
married you somewhere
in between
our first goodbye
and a place of dreams

you made plans
of a life beyond
the getting over –
the getting on
I sewed stars
from last night’s sleep
never worried long
for one to keep
faceless names
and ageless babies –
years between
the time we made
beneath the dark
of winter sky
another day
one more goodbye

one more hello
and a field remembers
seeds put down
one late September
for every dawn
there’s another sun
never meant to cheat
the road we’re on

faceless names
and ageless babies –
years between
the time we made
you make breakfast
and I’ll sleep in –
wrapped in stories
we fall again

baby, lessons, life, love, one more day, seasons, sometimes, stay, still

sweeter

what’s your hurry
getting nowhere
I can’t say it matters much
but I sure
wish
you’d ease your leaving
stick around
for one more touch

baby
I’m already missing
another chance for staying on
tho I’ll be safe
inside your crazy –
when nights are dark
years
too long

stick around
I’ll make you love me
tell your fortune nice and slow –
trade a dream
for one more morning
stick around

baby please
don’t go

. . .

things we might have said ~

gravel roads, learning as we go, life, love, postmark, rural, seasons, song, wearing through, you'd think living in Nashville would be worth something

savemedown

was ne’er the first
to let you go
miles on past the promise
you’d stay and I was
sworn to be your baby

a habit
sure to wear you down
a devil in a flannel gown
passions
more than one
to drive you crazy

boots and lace
the dream replaced
kisses not for keeping
but for these
old memories

things we might have said

as proof of heaven
here on earth
graces ne’er
so undeserved
a picture of a picture
on the dresser
of your soul

I’ll make a place
for your returning
dare I keep
these embers burning
reminders
I was sworn
to be your baby

. . .

on your pillow one day ~

stop talking
go on
no crying to mama
bout the absence
of plans –
a dream
growing old
hurry
don’t let the door
get in your way
of times
you discovered
one more reason
to stay
promise discerned
by the pulling apart
and notes
I left home
on your pillow
one day
clinging to chances
fortunate few –
a touch
not so hard
to resist
leave by the light
of a love
I’ll remember
words
worried cold
as the last time
we kissed

waitingdestinies

joseph
takes the twelve o’five
and wonders once again
to times removed –
a storm is moving in
of other girls
and weekend worlds
who would tell their mother
they’d met a guy
with bedroom eyes
one day

a sold out car
and not too far
to go before the leaving
clouds are gathered now
he understands
of one who waits
the other side
sits the night alone
searching through
the paper –
for memories
of home

for lines
to fit her story
tells she hasn’t told
a touch to bear
– some other hand
to hold

the cold night carries
whispers
in wait for words unsaid
joseph sees beyond
the road ahead

with wonder
when he’ll find her
when at last –
the cooling rain
a seat no longer empty
– a want to match
her name

jaded

and here I am
in a place I never thought
when the nights were only started
and the sky – a younger
dark
caught between
and wrapped around
a gnawing in my soul –
a silence born
of negligence –
coffee growing cold
and there you are
wasted as a morning after beer
staring out at lessons
never come –
who am I
to change the sheets
who am I to smile
when all you keep is leaving –
forgotten how
to run

once upon

when the summer path
has turned to rust –
and wingeds line the trees
– content to stir
as echoes
to the breeze

were times between
the golden glow –
the silver face of green
a lowly line
succumb to time –
is crossing us again

winter wheat
and dirty feet
were given to believe –
the autumn moon
was never meant
to tell –

april blossoms worried
as june bugs found july
waters rose
beyond the bank
to wash away
the night

moments
to the mayfly –
as secrets shared
with mars
venus wears her dresses
just the same –

age recalls
the coming back
miles of lonely tears –
whiskey warm in jelly jars
– wishes
by the well

spin me of another
some sweet day
to come –
the sound of naked feet
on
polished stone

the shrill of laughter
climbing –
timbers much too tall
than e’er we knew
would find us here

– and will us back
to home

withering

down from the city
what a pleasant surprise
to find you at home
on my porch –
drinking the last cup of coffee
I wonder
what comforts you now
the same as before

wishing you back
and chewing on pride –
leaning to moments
forgotten to miss
I’ll do your laundry
and know of your eggs –
how you like them
I don’t
but I keep them
for this

soap
the color
of new england roses –
sweaters and denim
have softened with age
habits have
taken me
longer for letting
go of the pieces –
a half written page

sealed to a life
I can barely remember
was a time
before –
I was me
spinning in circles
drunken illusion
of where – and of when
we were going
to be

pardon the mess
had I known you were coming –
might have baked you
a cake –

or burned the house down

. . .

left as the morning
was dried from the roses
and last night’s confession
absolved by the sun
drove just as heaven
found dirt in Kentucky
and slowed not the heart
getting on

another night’s rest
much better than last
with nothing much left to extole
would spend not remorse on
choices once made
or the etch of their worth
to my soul

was innocence lost
in my rush to believe
or blinders my color of eyes
a white picket fence
did its best to persuade
of reasons
for staying behind

another day gone
as the truth to set free
sooner or later was lost
the plan to give more
that I had to affirm
of dreams
I can barely recall

the pillow made dark
by yesterday tears ~
mascara I cared not concede
even now as the last glimpse
of night disappears
in the rearview mirror
I see

the highway sings
of whiskey and wishes
a favorite song made right
who I am now
didn’t matter much then
as last night’s confession
absolved by the sun
