lines are drawn
the sky burned dark
and all we knew
forgotten
hands to mourn
the warmth of one
as summer
came to mine
will distance grow
around me now
reminders
of a moment –
carved into
the memory
of time

from the silken green
of sleeping –
a night where stars are freed
swimming where your eyes
were met with mine

trading lace and story
for another
other time
witness to my pleading
come to me –

let my heart be broken
I won’t grieve
for lives between
tis only this –
reminding me of home

leave your box
of letters
just outside my door
teach me how to fly
let me fall

stay the night
stay til morning –
breathe my name aloud
as trade for one more kiss
a flannel dream

keep within your promise
heaven e’er you wake
beyond this night
of waiting –
come to me

. . .

I am ~

I am the road
an evening sunset –
left to burn
against your brow
I am the memory
of other summers –
where life began anew
somehow

I am breath
I am October –
a field of reds
where heaven grew
I am words
tho never uttered
I am life
returned for you

another me
as seasons follow
within the count
of death to days –
I am love
I will not falter
where’re the heart
my truth remains

. . .

fell together ~

breath, fate, history, let me, morning, remembering, seasons, stars, story, time, truth

we fell together
one night in march
when winds still warned
of an aching heart
you went home
and I pretending
of another day
we’d fall again

last night I slept
in a field of sand –
eighteen miles
of forgotten land
married you somewhere
in between
our first goodbye
and a place of dreams

you made plans
of a life beyond
the getting over –
the getting on
I sewed stars
from last night’s sleep
never worried long
for one to keep
faceless names
and ageless babies –
years between
the time we made
beneath the dark
of winter sky
another day
one more goodbye

one more hello
and a field remembers
seeds put down
one late September
for every dawn
there’s another sun
never meant to cheat
the road we’re on

faceless names
and ageless babies –
years between
the time we made
you make breakfast
and I’ll sleep in –
wrapped in stories
we fall again

. . .

winter blue ~

yesterday
I wrote your name
in shades of winter blue
curled against the margin
of a page
evening come
to claim my days –
but worried not the heart
and more than once
the ink was pressed –
to wonder
why you came

a question
left unanswered –
as dreaming fell to night
mesmerized by places
lifetimes gone
stars I know
they sparkle there –
brush the same dark sky
flickers falling
all these miles
from home

. . .

the long way back ~

in another place
I was –
crushed beneath the shadows
bowing down my head
chasing truths
do you remember
how it was –
the giving in to silence
as the echo of ten thousand
tired boots
a night succumb
to whispers –
a morning without shame
lights beyond the highway
burning sand
do you remember
was I with you
when the mountains
fell around
as waters rushed
to fill an empty land
I know you now
as I knew you then
another life
with nothing changed
this sweet goodnight
bathed in light
is reason
why we came

breath, comfort, counted days, love, memory, moments, sometimes, soul, spirit, story, surrender, time, truth, why we came

mercy finds us
sorely tempted –
at the end of letting go
clinging
as the final light
to fade

tis then
within our darkness
we remember why we came
and what is left
of every moment
made

regardless
our surrender –
or the lack of one to give
days are counted
back to us
the same

as keepers
sworn to memory
gifted us this way
as lifetimes
recollected
by name

. . .

blessings, breath, easy, love, moments, reflection, spirit, storms, time, truth

is this the day
I might have traded
for another life somewhere
cotton sheets
and sunday morning –
with nothing much
to spare

melodies
you played to me
are stretched along the line
as the scent
of summer storms
swirls beneath
the pines

a crooked board
a broken cup –
rings I’ve traced before
moments I was wanting
for another –
so much more

whispers bind
my life of pieces –
and everything is new
hands are fit together
as I’m falling
into you

. . .

of time ~

another me, becoming, breath, destiny, life, love, memory, moments, sorrow, spirit, stars, time, truth, wishes, words

for every sorrow
I was traded –
for a wish
beneath the stars
a breath
that was my pillow
spared of dreams
words
are given pardon
and a place
I still belong –
carried me
cross every night
between

becoming this
a lover’s rite
spun into a page –
verses wrapped
in verses
senseless rhyme
remembered
to another
where destinies
entwined –
wishes fell
to break the spell
of time

. . .

allowance, breath, forgiveness, grace, intent, life, lifetimes, love, moments, seasons, the illusion of letting go, time

were there moments
strung together –
webs between the lights
eternities
we gathered home
to dust

for another
once I wandered
out beyond the sense
of light –
forsaking of the magic
that was us
