carry me sweetly, knowledge, life, love, nature, poetry, silence, spirit, truth, understanding, what I know

are there songs
the swallow knows –
as breath against my ear
the poetry of doves
who can hear
a string of lines
only pines
are made to understand
notes beneath
the silences I fear

story yet unwritten
leaves
of yesterday –
moments stretched
to fill eternity
a touch
falls unnoticed
as wings upon the sea –
to find I never told you
what I whispered
to the breeze

are there words
I’ve still to ponder –
trapped beneath my skin
truths to breach the night
lest I pretend
there is nothing left
to make a noise
no feelings I can hide
songs I cannot hear
above the tide

. . .

breath for breath ~

age, gifts, home, journey, life, love, memory, seasons, time, truth, what we keep

were there signs
we failed to notice
edges faded gray
words we lost in speaking
as hearts for others
paid

other lives
we left forsaking
what might be our last goodbye
what might wait
beyond the sunset
coral wings
against the night

without fault
without remembrance
lest our days be counted less
than a moment
life was traded –
soul for soul
breath for breath

were there signs
we gave each other
memory carved into the soul
touching places
we were lovers –
coming home
and letting go

. . .

undone by telling ~

dreams, forgiveness, grace, home, love, mystery, seeking, surrender, time, wandering, writing in the dark

there’s truth
we scarce consider –
and one we dare not speak
a normal found
in courage lost –
a darkness not so deep

I’ve kept my word
in seeking –
for a path I knew before
hearts undone
by telling –
a truth I waited for

sometimes
the dream falls open –
as I wander with the night
beyond the risk of losing –
to a place of love
and light

when tempted I
by sorrows
for every hurt embraced –
moments of surrender
turn my wanting
into grace

. . .

enough to reconsider ~

death, dirt road, grace, gravel roads, home, journey, love, memory, pilgrimage, southern, spirit, that thing I do, time, weath

thirty miles
is not so far
tho less along the fences
lines already drawn
from heart to home
the road curves back
beside a creek
I remember once you held me –
the water was so cold
I cried for days

there’s a weathered bridge
a leaning barn
winter wheat and locust
boxes stand as one
their flags aloft
afternoons
the sun wears low
enough to reconsider
how many loves
forsaken to this road

cadillacs
and beat up trucks –
drift along the shoulder
pass without a curse
without a pause –
a fleeting recognition
of someone
once you loved
can’t see the tears
beyond the years
can’t say I’ve had enough
of honeysuckle
gravel roads
heaven spread before

weeds have bound
my thirsty heart
to yours

thirty miles
is not so far
lest I lose my way –
wait the creek to rise
would take me home

. . .

which way ~

all I know, find me, journey, life, love, mystery, questions, searching, sometimes, spirit, time, truth

how far
from where you left me –
are there traces to be found
broken twigs
whispers
marks upon the ground

places
I may find you –
lest I search beyond the veil
for the path you took
and there my heart
as well

branches bent
to block the sun –
winter wheat to ash
no one keeps your memory
and I can’t bear to ask

which way
the moon will follow
to find a promise made
past the barn
down the night –
another once we lay

how far
from where you left me
are there traces to be found

lilac blooms
a memory –
once we dreamed
together
making plans
holding hands
far more
than just this time
as moments come
promise held
the truth
of everafter
bears my weary soul
to sleep
each night

becoming, eternity, life, love, moments, morning, poetry, smile, sometimes, story, touch, witness me, words

paint my blush
as roses –
my kiss
a cherry wine
fill me with your story –
and I shall give you
mine

a painter
not a poet –
a writer made to bleed
take my ears
so they might learn
the ways you came
for me

steal my breath
my every word
verse I thought to pen
take of rhyme surrendered
– and write it
to my skin

paint my dreams
by candle –
my morning with your smile
leave the stars
to wonder
where we go

eternal, life, love, presence, promise, time, truth, undercurrents, what I know to be true

a sweeter sun
than e’er I thought
would rise to warm my face
tides are rolled
to bring us home –
far beyond
this place

as another dawn
a twilight red –
a place where life
remembers
where dreams are made
and wanting fades
verses heed no longer

for every truth
denied a place
another yet remains
in silence
words are spoken anyway

whispered into being –
solace of a prayer
this I know
where’er I go –
I was come
to stay

. . .

acceptance, all I really know, bliss, love, nothing more than this, poetry, soul memory, time, touch, trust

however lost
are moments past
now folded into days
and pushed against
the places I can’t reach
lessened by my leaving
a memory returns
of another life –
a place
I’ve sworn to be

when choosing comes
take my hand
lest we lose our way
imagine us a moment without end
welcomed recognition
of each eternity –
where love awaits
the choice to love
again

age, dream, home, life, love, my house, pieces of me, returning to a home we never left, spirit memory, story, time

what share would I give
of a life fully lived
another life to recall
arms reaching out
from the shadows –
words cut short
by the fall

a house settled back
on the edge of a wood
smoke in the air
in my eyes
steps from my watch
at the window –
dawns a familiar
sunrise

would e’er creation
remember me whole
to places I loved long ago
memories tease
at the edge of my reaching
of something
I already know

Author’s Note: Of those who know me well, a few know me better. They know of the house that has been a part of my dreams since I was a child. As of late, they come less frequent (I have a theory on that) but still. I’ve never been there, and yet I know it, and could find it if chance put me within a mile or two. I know the steps from the porch to the fence, the soft old rose print of wallpaper in the smallest bedroom, the way the wind howls through the trees at night. A dear friend who I shared my stories with once commented that she and I should take a trip in search of ‘the house’. “I’m sure it’s near here, and we could find out who actually lives there.” I froze. She didn’t understand at all. “I live there.”

In another life. I am in the kitchen as morning climbs the steps.  I dance beneath a faded bulb, and worry not for sleepless nights in which I am lost (I am found).  I love.

But in this life, in those moments that reach my soul, I pause. I place my hand against a window, upon someone’s heart. I close my eyes (a snapshot) and whisper “remember this”. ❤
