confession, courage, darkness, faith, home, hope, life, love, mystery, night, promise, truth

I have bartered
with the darkness –
wrapped myself in light
courting with shadows
– rolled beyond the hands
of night

I have loved
when there was nothing
worth surrender
to confess –
finding strength
to face another
calm to ease
my soul’s unrest

found a means
for moving onward
in search of destiny –
I have loved
and hesitated
for a truth
I couldn’t see

without remorse
for having wanted –
I was never far from home
I have waded
in the waters
cold and dark –
a lover’s stone

eternal, life, love, presence, promise, time, truth, undercurrents, what I know to be true

a sweeter sun
than e’er I thought
would rise to warm my face
tides are rolled
to bring us home –
far beyond
this place

as another dawn
a twilight red –
a place where life
remembers
where dreams are made
and wanting fades
verses heed no longer

for every truth
denied a place
another yet remains
in silence
words are spoken anyway

whispered into being –
solace of a prayer
this I know
where’er I go –
I was come
to stay

. . .

breath, love, memory, promise, shadows in the hall, silence, spirit, time

I can’t pretend
you make it easy –
how your silence wears me thin
how long –
the time becoming
til I see your face again

it might be years
it could be moments –
or lifetimes still to be
a breath beyond the leaving
is soon enough
for me

love, moments, promise, time, truth, words

would that I remember
today might be the day –
the end would come
with so much left
to say
a turning key
to lock us out –
a place beyond the night
where words are caught
in webs
like butterflies
would that I remember
what is promised
and what is true –
I’d have found the words
for telling my heart
to you

life, love, patience, promise, redemption, reminders why we came, time, truth

was never my intent
to carry all this grief –
to bend beneath the load
of circumstance
hastened by the notion
my heart would never mend
would squander
every breath –
if given chance

such foolishness
I should have seen –
surely learned by now
the way love is
the way love works
to give
as we allow

but I won’t lie
I can’t pretend
there hasn’t been some pain –
learning as it were
to live again

haunted by a promise
whispered long ago
within the dark
an ember of the sun
is wrapped in sweet reminders
lest my soul forget
beyond this night –
another day will come

. . .

a price to pay, acceptance, forgiveness, life, love, poet, promise, time, truth, writing

for wanting
there’s a price to pay
a promise I surmise –
to write again
when words are fell away
to garner loves forgiveness
for all I couldn’t say
when the nightbird came
to roost
above my bed

when the lacey lace
is torn apart –
stars forget to burn
as moonlight spills along
the eastern ridge
reminders come unbidden
to have their way at last
as punishment
for every word
unsaid

. . .

promises and gin ~

dreams, life, love, memories, promise, sometimes, surrender, the places I keep, time, truth, witness

another dawn
no different
than every day before –
a drink too much
whiskey chased by rain
a letter penned
and folded –
deeper than my fears
a lonely side
of pride
I’ll not complain

keys
and I’ve forgotten
what I cared for
near enough
to lock him up
with promises and gin
negligence by proxy
I can hardly rest
I dare not sleep –
I will not dream
again

by noon
my heart will wonder
what made me feel this way
these hands
will have no memory of us
no warmth where you might linger
a favorite perfume –
pressed into the places
that I love

. . .

if ever ~

if ever
for my words you ache
just listen for the night –
the steady drum
of stars succumb
to heaven chasing light
the cry of crickets
fiddles ring
as shadows round are cast
cedar boughs
forgiven now –
are kneeling on the grass
the stir of
night birds waking
to find another song
things I might have told you
– they will hold you
when I’m gone

. . .

a moment more for me ~

blessings, comfort, dreams, home, life, light, loss, love, promise, remembering, spirit, truth

when I’ve forgotten
will you promise
to carry all I love
into another day –
another life

when I’ve let the image go
of the oak
outside my door –
the smell of wood smoke
drifting through the pines

will you carry
will you tarry –
a moment more for me
when I’ve forsaken
every proof
of time

will you reminisce
as I have now –
on places I was loved
on dreams
I hope you dream
enough to find

a place apart
from everything –
a light where there are none
solace in these
memories
of mine

. . .

much the same ~

closer to heaven than the stars, destiny, fate, life, light, love, memory, promise, secrets, stars, stars by name, time, truth, wishes

was once
do you remember –
a moment much the same
we tracked the stars
and answered back
their names

traded
every secret –
but for another
fate to curse
even now I can’t recall
who was first

years and
everafters –
span a life
of might have beens
places we were one –
now again

come the burn
of red horizons
met with darkest coal –
stars against the heaven
of my soul

. . .
