she takes her poison
after tea –
before her evening shows
she spins around
the kitchen
and wonders
if he knows

how much of her
remains with him
despite the miles between
how much of her
is captive
to his dreams

once she starred
in color
almost every night
he whispered
while the coffee brewed
for he loved to see her smile

she knows the way
she counts the ways –
every stone by heart
as steps beyond the barn
into the dark

naked feet on hardwood
face against the door –
staring down the darkness
with faith in something more

how much of life is taken
by the breath
that bears us home
a name that tastes the same
is ours alone

. . .

time to tell ~

I confess
once you knew me
not as sure you know me now
when years have passed
my story changing –
and what of love
I dreamed about

might I stay
e’er you would listen
had I words and time to tell
of paths I took
of fate diverging –
far from ways
you knew me well

dare I speak
of sorrows tasted
recall anew a broken heart
remnants of a love
imagined –
when evermore
was not that far

. . .

a dream to ease the others –

a name upon my lips, a time for telling, abundance, ache, all I know, dreams, love, story

give me now
the ache to ache
the fear to feel
no longer
a place forgiven
laid to rest
a place where empty stands
a dream to ease
the others
should e’er I dare
forget
a life where waits
the living
a hand within
my hand

. . .

where I have gone ~

another life, dreams, life, love, memory, reality, spirit home, surrender, truth, words

some nights
I ache the absence
of words between these walls
I walk a broken floor
til daylight comes
surrendered to the notion
love won’t be defined
by lives I lived
dreams –
where I have gone

not one will know
of places –
another time
you called me home
so far from this remembrance
and all I’ve ever known
is pressed between the fading light
and when I close my eyes
I find you but
can’t speak of you
sometimes

. . .

given wings ~

beyond this restlessness
I feel –
there lies with you
a solace
of solitude perceived
but few can say
how many times
your name was called
but not a sound was heard
as whispers of a songbird
never sang

if ever you should wonder
where on earth
I’ve come to be –
when given wings
which way the winds to blow
where were you
when I was lost –
to lay my body down
and begged your spirit
come –
as one to know

where to light
another night –
scattered thoughts to fade
flush the edges
first for one more time
as made for us
a place apart –
shall call this dreamer home
across a page
and given none to
rhyme

the same as then
you are at last –
my seasons soft returning
red and yellow leaves
as love to will
quiet as a Sunday morn
warm as July nights
if ever life is come
my breath to still

. . .

never less ~

in darkest days
we seek the light
which shines eternally
our prayers for grace are answered then
as those I lift for thee

as ageless as the pen to trust
the truth grows ever clearer
returning love to all who love –
and seek to draw it nearer

pages tempted from the past
become my destiny –
each step one closer to the light
where others wait for me

should e’er my name your heart recall
in blood or ink confess –
then I shall love you still the more
and never love you less

. . .

rush to silence ~

daylight
sends a shiver
down my spine –
before I heed the wanting –
to resurrect a dream
twilight
wakes a longing –
where my heart has disappeared
and I am left to grieve
for times
between

I want to
understand –
how it is
you found me here
as paper birds
imagined into flight
as breezes blew
seedlings of a life
before I lived
moments rush to silence
the name you took
last night

. . .

save for one ~

a simple life
is all I ask –
a leaning barn
on a strip of land
was once my fathers will
for mine
riches for the keeping

could never want
for more than this
save for one
your morning kiss
save for one
as hope allows –
to be the one
you dream about

a broken fence
a weathered porch
life beyond
the reach of wars
beyond the lights
that grieve our stars
and curse the moon
for rising

. . .

never changed ~

dreams, easy, home, journey, life, locks, love, morning, seasons, story, time, trust, waiting since you left, welcome in

I’ve been waiting
out the winter –
for another sweet hello
as headlights press
the darkness like a ghost
there’s a map
inside my dresser –
silver lines against the blue
doesn’t matter
where we start
if I’m with you

my faith
is resurrected –
at the whisper of your name
a sigh of signs
and still my heart obeys
I can’t recall
the reasons
or how many roads
between
all I know is
all I need
to breathe again

the locks were never changed
to fit another
no plans for getting on
for getting by
don’t let the time it takes
be all that matters –

the sun still waits
all morning
for the night

. . .

all that matters ~

til I am faded
into pitch –
the memory of touch
almost erased
with no one to remember
why it was
or what it meant
how deep the soul’s
surrender
to something deeper still
written to the places
love has been

I’ve made my peace
had my say
with verses
o’er the years –
tempted fate more times
than were confessed
borrowed
from the ledger
of tomorrows left to spare
gave my love at times
for something less

a name
almost forsaken
awakes from tired dreams
to warm against
the heart –
with all that matters
a silent recollection
of days
beyond our count
and nights
we waited long
the morning after
