who shall mourn
the poet –
when poetry relents
the reader since
forgotten how to feel
who shall know
what loss is penned
just beneath a sigh
how many lovers grieved
for time to heal

who shall tell
the children
of magic left to make –
where the proof was found
and who remains
who shall man the tower
as witness offered up –
a parting kiss
reminding us
the first we knew
to love

. . .

broken trusts ~

a jealous moon, circle of life, gifts of grace, intimacy, love, mystery, nature, spirit, story, time, wandering, want

I will search
on fertile banks
where marigold is nestled
startled by the rivers
loyalty

I shall reach
for tiny crescents
buried by the sand –
in broken trusts
twisted with my hair
I will wait
as I have waited
for the time
to find you there

did I tell you once
of paths I roamed
unknowing
with a dream
suffered want unholy
to dream again –
I shall wait

as nights
beyond the wandering
in places
I have feared
in afternoons
where sunlight comes
to play

. . .

from everything ~

heaven memorized, love, need, poet, that thing I do, truth, want, witness, writing in the dark

I shall tender
these moments –
as cedar carved to pen
as ached beneath the threat
an evening flame
I shall cleave your name
from everything –
shall find you everywhere
a part of me
ten thousand more
than claimed

I shall wait the dusk
to falter –
rings of smoke to dissipate
evidence of story
you were here
and I
a moment fell into
a smudge between the lines
take me now
I’ve nothing left
to fear

. . .

one more dance ~

as easy as breathing, dance, grace, life, love, poet, soul, spirit, stars, time, want

might I ask for one more dance
a night beneath the stars
one more dream awakened
from the dark

wherever arms
are intertwined –
drums are beat as one
wherever verses live
beyond the tongue

light is come
to fill this want –
without the rush for more
for one more time
another dance
to know

. . .

what is ~

homeIcome

a thousand years
returning
another to endure
as twilight burned –
I can’t say for sure

whether I was yours
or you became
mine but for a night
a dream displaced
long before
daylight

before the plead
of morning
the rush of words to skin
was it the same
I knew you
as you knew me
then

you were there
when love became
the deepest want of all
– another life
beyond the
night birds call

whispered
into shadow –
the promise of goodbye
a thousand lives
surrendered
to a sigh

. . .

worn out rhyme ~

stay

told me once
but I don’t recall
names and faces
line the hall
someone I’ve forgotten
to remember
a story passed
from son to son
a daughter came
the only one
to see beyond
the circumstance
of fences

broken by this
getting on
healed by hands
tired and worn
graces said before
the lay me down
to hear again
the sacred drum
beat with wonder
I’ve become
the answer to another
sweet amen

a fate decided
while I slept
reminders of a secret kept
and choices made
was there no choice
at all
but take of life
a moment more
of passions
locked away before
somewhere I was sure
you’d never find

a future folded
nice and neat
against the sunshine
of my sheets
way back on the shelf
of memory
dreams of people
I don’t know
crowding round to let me go
kisses where
the curtains touch
the ground

tell me how it seemed to you
give me something
I can do
speak of places
one last time
to leave

dirty dishes
everywhere
worn out rhyme
but I don’t care
they warm against
the places
you were there
taking notes
and stealing time
with promises
to fit with mine
lines to cross
eternities
of one

. . .

Author’s Note: While coffee is my drink of choice, I periodically
indulge in a hot tea – white with orange. It brings me sweet slumber,
up until the time it wakes me up for a trip down the hall. But even then,
it’s not without the benefit of words. Writing in the dark.
