a cup of all that mattered ~

brought whiskey from
the cellar
tomatoes nearly green
wrote to you of oceans
caverns filled between
the first i thought to tell you
my love was yours alone
would free you from
the ache of carolina –
arms that feel so empty
have you gone
too far
from where we started
to unravel what was ours
one night we said too much
and fell away
i remember when the truth
succumb to shadow
a reach beyond the place
i prayed
to find you
forgotten every reason
left to stay

inhad you asked
I might have told –
might have willed my lips
to speak
to whisper of a future
not so far along were we
promise met
with something more –
a universe to save
pressed you to my heart
til I unwillingly
forgave
wayward
constellations
taking comfort with the stars
carved our names
as ancient flames
entrusted
to the dark
. . .

inshall I tell you
of a springtime –
of yellows undefined
hidden meadows
weaved by muscadine
a story still becoming
you were here
and I was saved
held against the tender
fold
where april
bled to may
shall I tell you
how I loved you –
how your want
filled every need
like a window
where my shadows
used to be
with ne’er a thought
to anything
would steal me from this light –
to sever
every memory
of spring
. . .
11 Friday Feb 2022
we were lanterns
caught in webs –
sparkled
with the dew
a righteous moon
made jealous
by the dawn
flames where wishes
landed –
near to places
once we lay
silence
falling stars
we counted on
we were sparks
within the heavens –
seeking love
we would
become
. . .

were love the same
as yesterday –
took you by surprise
a sideways glance
the consequence
of light
had not your heart been
propped against
the memory of dust
your lips with ache
for all I had
to say
a song
that has not played
but in your arms –
I remember well
the swell
of violins
. . .
03 Monday Jan 2022
a chill runs deep
as does my love
who
will understand
for every path
another was to claim
years of waiting
worried sick
the sky was soon
to fall
reason come –
carried by
the light
there are rivers
crushed
beneath the snow
tears
I thought were dried
– no way to prove
the way to home
was you
. . .

once
when there was nothing else
I held you –
soft against my stutter
til you became
more of me remembered
than e’er my heart
could hold
quiet as dawn
upon the snow
then I was leaving
o’er and o’er again
leaving you
with everything I ever
knew to be
quiet in the sky
beyond the stars
you waited
til I was gone –
I could hear you
in the pines
in the quiet desperation
of wings against the night
pressed into the ether
my stutter
my surprise
was to find you once again
forgotten why I left
let me stay
remembering the wonder
of why I came

if ever
for my words you ache
just listen for the night –
the steady drum
of stars succumb
to heaven chasing light
the cry of crickets
fiddles ring
as shadows round are cast
cedar boughs
forgiven now –
are kneeling on the grass
the stir of
night birds waking
to find another song
things I might have told you
– they will hold you
when I’m gone

blessing, closer to forever than the stars, eternity, home, light, love, memory, nearer, remembering, soul, truth, witness
just beyond the branches reach
beyond the furthest light –
I remember well a reef
of diamond shards –
a single arm reaching out
into the vast unknown
cradled as we were
against the stars
waters swirled around us
sands were washed away –
oceans fell their sorrows
at our knees
poetry was written
with ne’er a thought to rhyme –
carried by the tide
into the sea
the moon was still our friend
embers before dawn –
angels wept for worlds
beyond our own
traces of eternity
still shine beyond the trees –
awaiting our remembrance
to be known
