story holds
the best of me –
days before you came
counting every
mercy
as goodbye

ferry me
some distance –
had I known you
from the start
years
to shape wonder
into light

touch where
morning lingers
as warmth against
my skin –
let this pleading heart
be satisfied

when age
is counted backward
words beneath
my pen
let me ease
my story
with your sigh

. . .

pray me down ~

blessing, longing, love, sometimes, stay, time, truth

dream
and I will find you here
sleeping in my bed
wrapped in light
wherever longing sits
stay the night
pray me down –
sighs are all I need
to make me yours
would prove your heart
a thief

gather me
wildflowers –
write to me
in stone
speak as if you never
meant to go
burden me a future
a fate we dared believe
sail me home
on waves I cannot see

. . .

barter, blessing, comfort, grace, home, love, morning where I am found, sometimes, story

secreted away
as the eldest daughter
of a favored son
a will that gave
away the farm
was never mine to give
how much of these
were pardon
for the ways I am
with you
how much I gave
without a thought
of all there was
to lose
morning sits
beyond the frost
as sure is warmth
to come
carried by
the wondering of
who was I before
a sideways glance
to alter fate
a cloud to hide
the moon
more than this
as heaven here –
evidence
of truth

blessing, journey, passage, promise, seasons, spirit memory, time, trust, what we keep

until the end
of all we’ve gathered
this my vow
i make to thee
to free my heart
of every wanting –
love that not a tear
shall ease

until the sun
is burned to cinder
spreading heat
across the day
I shall lie awake
til morning –
to pull you in
and beg you stay

until my lips
are words forsaken
coldest night
in which we sleep
I shall dream
your arms around me –
as heaven here
my soul
will keep

age, blessing, longing, memory, moments, prayer, time, truth, writing in the dark, years

were living
made heavy
by times we let pass
days we forgot
for graces to grieve

were love
but a memory
carved to our soul
a place
we remembered
to be

gathered
to story
the weight of our years
moments deeper
than skin

were longing
the measure by which
we remain
a name
breathed in silence
amen

assurance, blessing, breath, divine intimacy, love, shared mystery, skin, spirit, time

I am everything
and nothing –
a piece of aging cloth
a failing light
when every light is down
a whisper
once a lullaby
remember
how you sang –
of whiskey
when the glass was cold
stories when they came
to close my eyes
and listen
tell me how it was again
speak to me of rivers
of your breath
upon my skin

blessing, chance, choice, death, longing, loss, mercies, time

years have gone
yet still I worry –
restless comes
when nights are cold
habits cling
as proof of something
strong enough
my heart
to slow

life is changed
and for a season –
shadows shift
to block the sun
planets drift beyond
my reaching –
as longing waits
the end
for none

who shall know
of living wasted –
of mercies left
with time
to spend
remnants
from another
mother –
when love was chance
to love again

. . .

blessing, death, grace, let me, loss, love, sorrow, truth

whatever life
i’ve left to owe
of graces given me –
gardens not yet seeded
in my wake
let me go
the way of winds
denied the fate of man
as longing proved
another soul
to save

let me dance
three angels deep
for moments undeserved
as lilac blooms
wherever roses grow
let me be
your secrets
a dream within your dream
as life restored –
a truth nobody
knows

blessing, forgiveness, home, life, light, love, nature, seasons, sometimes, spirit memory, truth

once
when there was nothing else
I held you –
soft against my stutter
til you became
more of me remembered
than e’er my heart
could hold
quiet as dawn
upon the snow
then I was leaving
o’er and o’er again
leaving you
with everything I ever
knew to be
quiet in the sky
beyond the stars
you waited
til I was gone –
I could hear you
in the pines
in the quiet desperation
of wings against the night
pressed into the ether
my stutter
my surprise
was to find you once again
forgotten why I left
let me stay
remembering the wonder
of why I came

all I really know, and still, before we understood, blessing, grace, life, love, naked truth, poetry, wealth, wildflowers

a golden stem
a temple bell –
an altar I have raised
tis here I bow
and here I place my hands
in prayer for place
for circumstance
would give your song to me
to fill a grand cathedral
and bring me
to my knees

a poem without rhyme
is all I have to bring
lines are naked
verses without shame
senses now awakened
to moments lived
apart
graces I have taken –
I have taken
in your name

walls of deepest cedar
floors are warped
by tears –
as holy once the wine
we passed between
the lips that mouthed surrender
tongue where truth
is grieved
love when there is nothing
would cleave your breath
from me
