do you remember
crickets playing
well into the night
an oasis formed of dreams
hiding there
granny’s blanket
folded –
a carrier of wish
for days
I pulled starlight from
my hair

11 Friday Feb 2022
we were lanterns
caught in webs –
sparkled
with the dew
a righteous moon
made jealous
by the dawn
flames where wishes
landed –
near to places
once we lay
silence
falling stars
we counted on
we were sparks
within the heavens –
seeking love
we would
become
. . .

before the time
unknowing
the end was not the end
but a means of understanding
where healing
might begin
before the rush of waking
one dream
allowed to be –
fell within the promise
of lost eternities
before the will
longing knew
where our paths would lead
thru gardens of allowance
tendered now to seed
was evermore
a place beyond –
dawn without remorse
were skies forgave the heavens
where lovers love
once more

blessings, grief, kiss, life, love, lovers, seasons, souvenirs, time, truth, wealth, what we keep
what feelings
will tomorrow bear
when I return to dust –
the path we wandered
helplessly –
hands becoming one
will someone seek
the answers –
as tender years unfold
will verses speak
to lovers
seeking solace
from this load
with time so short
sometimes unfair –
grant me this goodbye
that I might memorize
the ways we came
grant me nothing more
than one more kiss –
a final breath
made sweeter by
your name

inmy fears
are unfounded
you cannot escape
the verse
where my heart
keeps you safe
a lock never chiseled
a key you have kept
long past
the moment
for pulling away
to wonder
how close
meter could fall –
and what might I do
should you stay
. . .

time is but a careless lover
longing left
beneath the skin
pretty words
are proof of nothing –
destinies let loose
again
breath
resolved to indecision
– forsaken every want to feel
a choice to go
a need to linger
futures spent
in standing still
soundless cries
as silence whispers –
to ease the hurt
once feared the heart
mourning comes to steal forever
left to chance
the sweetest part
would the calm delay
my going –
ten thousand lives
before we end
time is but a careless lover –
longing trapped
beneath my skin
. . .

confession, forgiveness, it's what I do, just like this, letting go, lies, life, love, lovers, truth becoming, wait, words, writing without rhyme
I’ve been a saint
been a sinner –
a fury raged
against the page
I’ve found love
and sure forgiveness
suffered me
the will to wait
of all the others
come before you –
count me blind
I’ve known my share
of pretty liars
so familiar –
enough to bury
deep somewhere

she lingered
as a presence –
a prayer
before the dawn
as the music
of her sighs
became his song
he lingered
with each twilight –
without fault
she dared repeat
– as a kiss
became a memory
just as sweet
twas never less
for letting –
love remains
as proof we are
where she lingers
still he lingers
as a light
between the stars

becoming, dusted, firelight, grace, kiss, life, love, lovers, memory, southern, stars, time, treasure, truths, without word
the first kiss
your last goodbye
held as mine
‘neath jealous skies
where truth was sealed
by wordless sighs
lies
too old
to remember
the way we came
from roads before
with want for none
but grace for more –
than a hand could hold
a heart would store
in boxes old
and bursting
given place
a rite of rest
one promise sweet
tho unconfessed
with all I am –
with nothing less
than a song
you taught me
whisper
into the still
surrounding now
when by ten thousand
deaths
I vow
another breath
somewhere
somehow
in fields by heaven
seeded
another first
‘neath amber skies
where angels dance
by firelight
where truth was sealed
by wordless sighs –
lies
too old
to remember

Author’s Note: Pieces of this have haunted me over the last couple weeks. Not long ago, I wandered to an old road not far from where I grew up. I could see clearly that an industrial park was hedging bets on every spare inch of land. But on another day (another life), the trees barely parted for the lane, and beyond was a field deep with wheat and dreams. I don’t know whether ‘parking’ is a southern thing or not. I’d hate to think that we’re the only ones with an appreciation for summer nights on a lacey quilt – witnesses to heaven beneath a blanket of stars.

a weeping jehovah
bound by regret
another town over
I stayed –
beyond the redemption
of skin touching skin –
beyond the confession
of sin
I’d forgotten to tell you
forsaken the blame
for a lifetime of verses
repeated the same
by lovers
by fathers
poets and priests
some other I loved you
down on my knees
fevers entwined
where counting
we kept
pace with a promise
made real
as we slept
tempted to dream
though certain to wake
alone
in our wanting
another to make
