of places
I’ve forgotten
the fragile ache of growth
summer tucked inside
my winter shirt
the way snowflakes glimmer
atop the tender bud
warmth that comes
to steal my breath
away

. . .

she leans
against the memory
was once her favored spring
a dress she wore
to rouse him –
from his sleep
beneath
the snow

. . .

by design ~

for graces
I’ve forgotten –
blessing without shame
paths I took
another day –
delivered me
the same

tho now my heart
is loosened
by the weight of
yesterdays
love I held much longer
than choice
to give away

of starry nights
loving arms –
gifted by design
mornings when
another sun
broke through –
a moment of forever
holy mine

a sacred truth
is written here –
to my soul
and on my face
hands I’ve held
names I keep –
as evidence
of grace

. . .

the first to fold ~

of sorrows
I have spoken –
not with tears
or sore regret
for every time the leaving left
a heart not broken yet

an ailing porch
and night pulled close
with nothing much to fear
for the sound of love
returning home –
cross miles
and men – and years

the first to fold
of every sin
begged forgiveness come
without the need for telling
would save us –
every one

came the night
by firelight –
and kept the coffee strong
til morning fell
with none to tell –
of righteousness gone wrong

as scattered verse
by prophets cursed
can’t be one to say –
what reasons came for letting go
and not a one to stay

. . .

as it has been ~

age, close enough to touch, lessons, love, memory, seasons, time, truth, warmth

do you miss the ache
of my hand in yours
another day –
my head against your heart
when darkness falls
unwilling
to the soul that waited long
will you feel my love
settled with you
there

as more than touch
more than breath returning
more than words
rewritten to your skin
wherever time
was promised
let it be as it has been
a place
where love remembered
wakes again

feel the warmth
this tender ache
my hand within your hand
a falling rain
of memories persist
where once
is still –
a dream recalled
my head against your heart
awaiting us a lifetime
such as this

. . .

breath before rising ~

in the swell of the tide
a breath before rising –
in the roll of the sands
neath the shore
I’ve noticed the rivers
run deeper than blood –
and the trees
taller still than before

I’ve reckoned the sun
how she leans to the right
when no one is watching
but me
how she warms to my skin
as home she remembers –
a lantern set high
on the sea

sometimes morning
awakens the night –
with whispers of promise undone
prickled by weeds
berries and blossom –
fireflies skimming
the pond

bitterly sweet
scattered transgressions –
as who for another
moment would trade
dust from a memory
of life as we knew –
to wait for a night
in the shade

. . .

all that matters ~

til I am faded
into pitch –
the memory of touch
almost erased
with no one to remember
why it was
or what it meant
how deep the soul’s
surrender
to something deeper still
written to the places
love has been

I’ve made my peace
had my say
with verses
o’er the years –
tempted fate more times
than were confessed
borrowed
from the ledger
of tomorrows left to spare
gave my love at times
for something less

a name
almost forsaken
awakes from tired dreams
to warm against
the heart –
with all that matters
a silent recollection
of days
beyond our count
and nights
we waited long
the morning after

another time

what of days
my soul was dealt –
and sacrificed to wonder
the sparkle of each star
the river’s will
just how
the mountains shiver
beneath a blanket –
deep and cold
the way the ocean rises
another moon to know
I’ve learned the song
of nightingales
the cry of turtle doves
stood beneath
an ancient elm
counting rings
the map of kings –
making my way
to love

what of days
my soul was dealt

baby, lessons, life, love, one more day, seasons, sometimes, stay, still

sweeter

what’s your hurry
getting nowhere
I can’t say it matters much
but I sure
wish
you’d ease your leaving
stick around
for one more touch

baby
I’m already missing
another chance for staying on
tho I’ll be safe
inside your crazy –
when nights are dark
years
too long

stick around
I’ll make you love me
tell your fortune nice and slow –
trade a dream
for one more morning
stick around

baby please
don’t go

rememberthis

for longer
than I dared allow
a whisper claims my sleep
an echo of my longing –
silent chords

branches bang the shutters
as quietly I creep
cold these native feet
upon the boards

searching out
the answers
where my love remains
stories of the coming back
to wonder why we came

shadows dance
a drunken waltz
of lives before I woke –
days and dreams returning
for my name
