The fancy things I like are nine hundred count sheets. Tea cups with matching saucers. And the things I love that aren’t fancy at all: old aprons and hankies. Dirt roads and dirt floors. Forsythia bushes, hardback books of poetry. And I like other things less than those but still; the sticky remains at the bottom of the cherry cobbler dish. The way cats sometimes run sideways. The presence of a rainbow in a puddle of oil. Jelly jars. Pine needles. Wash on a line. The tick-tock of clocks, the blue of the neon sign outside an old motel still open. The fact that there is an old motel still open. ❤

carry me home, do you remember, fleeting seasons, life, love the only truth

had i waited
on the spring
to gather me
for home –
the scent of winterberries
on the vine
had i held my breath
a moment here
to let the snowfall melt
bare feet
where roses grew
one morning
you were mine
as shadows burned
to daylight
dancers on the floor
pages from our story
to defend
when recalled
the times we wasted
waiting one more
kiss –
leaves became
the color of the sun
destined
by the cold
to fall again

a hand to hold, a name upon my lips, always we begin, belonging to none, home, life, love the only truth, story

for moments
unaccounted –
a lifeline strung along
love awaited
past pretension
not to worry
at your wrongs –
your ways
a plea becoming
words I wait
the night to hear
touch I crave
this one and
only –
you were come
and love was here
in the cool
beneath my pillow
shadows
folded into dawn
moments
time became
illusion
when your touch
became
my song

a hand to hold, beyond the knowing, everywhere I am, home another way, love the only truth, radical remembering

what loss
might i concede
holding back the storm
waiting yet of fate –
a certain fall
when years are spread
beyond the snow
as northern lights –
a summer kiss
recalled

sweet
the taste of ash –
as bitter once a flame
cooled against my tongue
another day
grieve my hands
tender lands
given time to know
was paradise
by some other name

will truth be found
more than this
a muted understanding
lines
where none were drawn
empty folds
lifetimes to become
silences –
to rise
warmth to seek
whene’er the ground
goes cold

blessings of the heart, enough, life, love the only truth

within this heart
a tired house
with rooms
for all I’ve loved
ones I held
those I lost
save for my resolve
memories are such
the walls are falling
I can’t see the door
once I knew
the weight of love
the weight of letting go
a porch leans down
to meet the stars below
but there’s no need
no guarantee
of room beyond this breath
no absolute
my heart will hold it
all

belonging, dreaming awake, love the only truth, magic, mystery, seeing in the dark, spirit, time, wisdom, witness, wonder

I went looking
for the verses
before they searched
for me –
miles beneath
a canopy of stars
pushed along
when everything was
telling me to go
sometimes the morning came
and I was gone
I’ve watched
the way unravel
and stitched it back
in place
told myself some lies
to get me on
etched a map of evermore
and covered it
with skin
sold myself
sold the world
for one more time
begin
I’m not so young
as I was then
save for memories
traded on a future –
none could own
none could see
as poems prayed –
eyes were closed
to everything but us
I felt my heart the most
within your love

this way ~

allowance, cummings, ee, feeling, life, little words, love the only truth, nothing more than this, story, truth, witness

save me

is this the way
(it has to be)
lest I pretend not to know
– of love where love is said aloud
called (by name)
to home

reasons you have –
and words to make me stay

(reasons you have
for keeping me
this way)

I won’t go
(please don’t let me)
– how I hate goodbyes
lines redrawn across an angry page
(yet here am I)

I won’t beg
and you wouldn’t want me
(to crawl)

I’m too old
for making good
on promises left unsaid
– too gone
(to think I came)
to lose it all

heaven pulls the
mountain –
from his fragile wedding bed
anchored by the river –
to her song
breezes grieve the lesson
dragonflies to score
this sacred place
remembered to
our soul

one more verse
to cover me –
one more birth to fall
as waters move
around me in the cold
quietly – a soft amen
rustles from the trees
brittle leaves
to dance atop
the foam

let indeed
the shadows tempt
with mysteries uncertain –
swirls beyond
this wake of mortal care
magic lies
in wilderness
bound by fragile thorns
journey on –
and I shall find you
there

what road ahead
seems shorter
for passing into night
lest shadows fall
against a wiser sun
an imprint of my journey
where telling
might I go
deciding now
an ending not foretold

time
and I’ve remembered
the squander of my days
returned as one
untethered from the rest
a single step
when all about
the hurry for direction
one and then
another here –
the path revealed
to home

onceIknew

stories now
my daddy tells
of times before the better
took us by surprise
and shut our soul
of red clay paths
and old tin lines –
mary heaven
showed us
the ways to home
was not so far
to go

no ringing
of the latest news
no clamor to achieve
candles burned
beside
the feather bed
children wrapped
in babies
held as one to one
blessings come
– wherever
prayers were said

no looking back
or leaving long
another chance –
for nothing
would shake our faith
or move the least
to fall
dirty hands
so tender –
eyes caressed the light
dreams just big
enough –
to hold us all
