allowance, enough, grace, life, love the only truth, time

The fancy things I like are nine hundred count sheets. Tea cups with matching saucers. And the things I love that aren’t fancy at all: old aprons and hankies. Dirt roads and dirt floors. Forsythia bushes, hardback books of poetry. And I like other things less than those but still; the sticky remains at the bottom of the cherry cobbler dish. The way cats sometimes run sideways. The presence of a rainbow in a puddle of oil. Jelly jars. Pine needles. Wash on a line. The tick-tock of clocks, the blue of the neon sign outside an old motel still open. The fact that there is an old motel still open. ❤

blessings of the heart, enough, life, love the only truth

within this heart
a tired house
with rooms
for all I’ve loved
ones I held
those I lost
save for my resolve
memories are such
the walls are falling
I can’t see the door
once I knew
the weight of love
the weight of letting go
a porch leans down
to meet the stars below
but there’s no need
no guarantee
of room beyond this breath
no absolute
my heart will hold it
all

enough, evidence, just this way, let me, life, love, proof, reminders, truth, witness

let me be
until I fade
ragged edges flecked
with blue
a memory reliant
as unstable
let me be
shake me from these ashes
rattle with my bones
til a song emerges
cleanly
as one you know
let me be
til I am lost –
til I am
found

broken fences, easy as I, enough, faith, gravel roads, home, it's what I do, life, love, memory, time, writing in the dark

come the morning
of redemption –
city lights
to fade your doubt
for every time
another came
and I was left without

breath no longer easy
was a plead for me
to stay
tho I couldn’t hear
I wouldn’t hear
words you’d never say

for every life
you promised
another perfect place –
an empty barn
a broken fence
memories retraced

to kiss this ground
and cleave my heart in two
been buried
more than once –
beside the river
next to you

shadows slide
on maple floors
while someone that I knew
remembers me
from other times –
a lover passing through

the worst is done
the right made wrong –
and who am I
for asking –
will the crops be gone
before the frost
is come

faraway
so faraway
and where we’ll be
worth telling –
city lights
are faded now
to places faraway

would stay the sun
and block the path
from taking more to pay
the bills tomorrow
bargained for –
with love so far
away

a simple life
is all I ask –
a leaning barn
on a strip of land
was once my fathers will
for mine
riches for the keeping

could never want
for more than this
save for one
your morning kiss
save for one
as hope allows –
to be the one
you dream about

a broken fence
a weathered porch
life beyond
the reach of wars
beyond the lights
that grieve our stars
and curse the moon
for rising

homeward

i miss
the way
you knew me when
against the shadows cast
the way you looked
beyond –
into the glass
of almost everything
i am –
less than just before
your eyes
where cooled
the sweetest shade
of only seeing more
than words
could tell –
vows returned
to promise time
and truth
i miss the way
the stars aligned
bringing me
to you

I was an only child
for a year or two –
selfishly taking of kisses
a moment or more
wouldn’t matter that much
until another was come
to arms not as long
with eyes the same shade
of carry me home

How soon disregarding
a half distant drum –
and tears
once cried just for me
nights where the pillow
held no allure –
dreams I spent walking
alone until dawn

Spied from afar
a trembling flame –
shadows cast over
the lawn
mandolins playing
where have you gone
as I ran ahead
into love that was mine
