beautiful weakness, broken, checkmate, learning, life, love, mystery, okay is far from happy, scars, strength, trust, truth, vulnerable intimacy

gift me
with your darkness
shadows where you live
stories you’ve forgotten
how to tell
wherever you are missing
I shall give the same –
beauty in the fracture
hurts I cover
well
trust these arms
to fold you –
I can bear it all
swim within the ocean
of my tears –
honor me the presence
of your fall

. . .

the last forever ~

it’s not the way
I’d meant to say –
the way I meant to leave you
was not the plan
you’d understand
if e’er you knew my faults
for staying here
for one more year
one more night of dreaming
of faraways
when another day
you’d wake to find me gone
with nothing sure
so insecure
was the line we crossed together
of rights made wrong
we strung along
beyond the last forever

. . .

at the end
to have even a stranger
hold his hand, close his eyes
fold his arms over his chest
and say a simple prayer
not to die alone

at the end
to catch the white light
without the weight of solitude
to dry her eyes, to calm her fear
to light a last candle together
not to die alone

at the end
to speak of my far away family
to dream aloud of angels
to believe life was worth it, leaving no trace
except a stranger remembering my voice
not to die alone

at the end
to have someone mourn
look fondly at a photograph
in an album or on the wall
a tombstone engraved with love
not to die alone

. . .

curses
catch the sheets on fire
when chance
you swore to leave
broken
every plate I own
decided not to grieve

for the busted chair
the heavy heart –
weeds to crowd my soul
a bridge in need
of mending –
morning whispers
cold

as winter warned
the flame to die –
with promises of spring
ashes silt the corners
reminders –
every thing

of yesterdays
returned anew –
the choice made long ago
flowers bloom
in shades of smoke
– for reasons
I don’t know

. . .

Author’s Note:  I’ve been carrying this
picture around for almost three
years…..waiting for words
to wake me.

wishing well ~

came a thief
who took the mountain
took away the peaceful stream
gave a silver plated nickel –
to the beggar
for his dreams

took the ways for which we wandered
left us nothing for the fight
took the heart (was once so tender)
pulled it (pleading)
from the light

was a thief
who took of pardons –
spoke in tongues (we strained to hear)
promised wine (a crystal fountain)
somewhere far
(not far from here)

spoke of highways
thru the heavens –
told of trust beyond the veil
sold us courage from a bottle
jaded cup (a wishing well)

from those moments
came another –
one more chance to turn away
another dollar for our wishes
stars we loved –
at once betrayed

for the hope of more
than vision –
righteous want
for more than will
took the last of mortal conscience
lifetimes passed us –
standing still

came a thief
in prophet’s clothing –
golden robes (of fated sun)
took of breath –
the soul’s impression
left behind the empty one

beyond the place you tary
in the ribbons worn by pain –
and the scars I love
I kiss them in my dreams
you come to me
and I to you –
in perfect imperfection
to touch the words we’ve given
jasper wings
to know of north
you surely are –
home within my longing
as sparrows rush the night
and sense the way
the same as these
were given you –
hands to trace you backward
winds to sail
and I your name to hear
dream of me in fields of clover
call for me that way
and I shall walk on oceans
to your door
to lay against the crooked boards
that rise to give you reason
touched against the places
of your love
