morning grace

gathered to place
as souls reconvened
for the purpose
of living –
as love

who we’ve become
in the darkness
it seems –
a people of faith
not enough

I’m guilty
as others –
moreso that some
convincing myself
of my right

but wearing
the truth –
it sleeps with me still
and keeps me from being
a light

. . .

beyond the redemption of sin ~

a weeping jehovah
bound by regret
another town over
I stayed –
beyond the redemption
of skin touching skin –
beyond the confession
of sin

I’d forgotten to tell you
forsaken the blame
for a lifetime of verses
repeated the same
by lovers
by fathers
poets and priests
some other I loved you
down on my knees

fevers entwined
where counting
we kept
pace with a promise
made real
as we slept

tempted to dream
though certain to wake
alone
in our wanting
another to make

. . .

the last forever ~

it’s not the way
I’d meant to say –
the way I meant to leave you
was not the plan
you’d understand
if e’er you knew my faults
for staying here
for one more year
one more night of dreaming
of faraways
when another day
you’d wake to find me gone
with nothing sure
so insecure
was the line we crossed together
of rights made wrong
we strung along
beyond the last forever

notfar

along these shores
forever walks
a sailor not forgotten –
strands beneath a winter sail
make his passing true
stories of deliverance
tales of wealth and sorrow
dreams to sink beneath the waves
the rest to float away

but on another bank
there sometimes stands
a maiden gift with promise
words worn through
by circumstance
I swore I’d never cry

life is passing slowly
the waves of time are falling –
and he still sails
come home
remember this –
remember me
the keeping of your compass
grains of sand adrift upon the sea

come again
leave her arms –
returning to the river
the ocean cries –
o please return to me
cast aside your tired oars
and step out on forever
I’ll watch the tide –
and walk the shores for you

. . .
