time to tell ~

I confess
once you knew me
not as sure you know me now
when years have passed
my story changing –
and what of love
I dreamed about

might I stay
e’er you would listen
had I words and time to tell
of paths I took
of fate diverging –
far from ways
you knew me well

dare I speak
of sorrows tasted
recall anew a broken heart
remnants of a love
imagined –
when evermore
was not that far

. . .

while you were gone –

grace
a sweet illusion
tender greys and blue
silver stones and no one left
to understand
our truth

hand in hand
here and there –
as one
no different we
were lessons come
from waking –
a will of destinies

I’ve wandered far
to find my way –
miles while you
were gone
and for a time
all I had –
was a memory of home

but for one
I make a vow
would not the breadth of life
conceal
when winter folds around
love will warm me
still

without permission ~

for in the threads
where life is knotted
colors blend to form a new
shade of red
the sunrise sweeter –
as the sea –
a kinder blue
traces
loving graces
pull apart
each fragile weave
spun to webs
of rich communion
the heart expands
as we receive
without permission
one together –
moments broken
til we become
someone’s breath
someone’s only –
someone’s light
outshines
the sun

tethered to the trees ~

of riches
I have nothing
but the memory of love
gathered close as breath
near as touch

the soul remembers
lest I faint
was lost
tho I am not
faith has kept me
tethered to the trees

drifting
on an evening gale
life restored
as choice to be
held within a promise –
a seeker sure to see

the world is changing
as am I
as e’er were we
to start
racing toward forever
not a breath apart

as certain grace
a holy place
reserved
of none I own
a tender prayer
is whispered there
faraway
is here
and I can’t tell the difference
between love
and letting go

let the truth
in living
fold around
the memory of where
I’ll be
some wiser sun
will pull me from the branches
trailing winds
where once
I was set free

. . .

where I have gone ~

some nights
I ache the absence
of words between these walls
I walk a broken floor
til daylight comes
surrendered to the notion
love won’t be defined
by lives I lived
dreams –
where I have gone

not one will know
of places –
another time
you called me home
so far from this remembrance
and all I’ve ever known
is pressed between the fading light
and when I close my eyes
I find you but
can’t speak of you
sometimes

flannel dream ~

from the silken green
of sleeping –
a night where stars are freed
swimming where your eyes
were met with mine

trading lace and story
for another
other time
witness to my pleading
come to me –

let my heart be broken
I won’t grieve
for lives between
tis only this –
reminding me of home

leave your box
of letters
just outside my door
teach me how to fly
let me fall

stay the night
stay til morning –
breathe my name aloud
as trade for one more kiss
a flannel dream

keep within your promise
heaven e’er you wake
beyond this night
of waiting –
come to me

. . .

words without meaning ~

it’s my fated returning
of bark unto vine –
where cedars embrace the maple
lucious blackberry
and muscadine blue
are weaved together a rhyme
no sweeter could be
of places not far
miracles hid in plain view
sworn as allegiance
our wonders to bring –
holy most holy
of all we are due
washed by the rivers
of stormclouds to spring –
rush me til breath falls away
stand with me currents
made dear by returning
cypress and hickory
sunlight and shade
lie with me now –
in words without meaning
or mention by name
til less they might be
taste of these tears
as seasons
pass over – one
love becoming
a forever I knew

. . .

faraway ~

come the morning
of redemption –
city lights
to fade your doubt
for every time
another came
and I was left without

breath no longer easy
was a plead for me
to stay
tho I couldn’t hear
I wouldn’t hear
words you’d never say

for every life
you promised
another perfect place –
an empty barn
a broken fence
memories retraced

to kiss this ground
and cleave my heart in two
been buried
more than once –
beside the river
next to you

shadows slide
on maple floors
while someone that I knew
remembers me
from other times –
a lover passing through

the worst is done
the right made wrong –
and who am I
for asking –
will the crops be gone
before the frost
is come

faraway
so faraway
and where we’ll be
worth telling –
city lights
are faded now
to places faraway

would stay the sun
and block the path
from taking more to pay
the bills tomorrow
bargained for –
with love so far
away

stories unremembered ~

from these pieces
will they ever
understand the way we were
all this fighting over nothing
will they wonder –
what was for
of the buried
of the broken
will the weary
be misled
when moss is
grown around us –
will they deem our savior dead
will they shake their heads
in questioning
of when and why we came –
and gather near our remnants
to worry o’er each name
rewritten there
committed every discontent
to stone
for stories unremembered
but to these who weep alone
will our beauty
be forgotten
by a world who never knew
the ways we came
to understand
the mystery of truth
