were not for breath
a moment more –
than e’er the years were promised
were not for prayer
I spoke aloud
or gave to stars
one night

as venus burned
another sun
I fell into your eyes
beyond a meadow
deep and sweet –
flush with fireflies

were destinies delivered
a kiss at seventeen
became a wish
to stars recalled –
the memory
of a dream

if e’er I wrote
without your name –
or felt an ache
beneath each rhyme
I’d find you still
your fingerprints –
pressed
along my spine

but for words
I’d trade my pen –
and lay aside
attempts at grace
for once I drew
my fate with yours
along and down
an anxious page

tis not enough
to speak aloud –
for silence now
the truth will speak
as breath between
ten thousand sighs
more than I thought
could be

how far
from where you left me –
are there traces to be found
broken twigs
whispers
marks upon the ground

places
I may find you –
lest I search beyond the veil
for the path you took
and there my heart
as well

branches bent
to block the sun –
winter wheat to ash
no one keeps your memory
and I can’t bear to ask

which way
the moon will follow
to find a promise made
past the barn
down the night –
another once we lay

how far
from where you left me
are there traces to be found

somewhere I know
you’re missing me –
I feel it in my bones
thick as blood
the curse of love
some other to atone

some other truth
an ageless lie –
to me they taste the same
as chicory to brandy –
memory to flame

somewhere
there is no faulting –
or life to intercede
somewhere
we sleep as one
in fields of green

beyond the reach
of wanting –
for another hand to hold
somewhere
the heart remembers
how I miss you
in my soul

when the mountains
succumb to the weight
of their worries
and rivers return
to their source
when the sun stays aloft
in wait for her moon
will I have forsaken
the story of us

when all becomes one
I will be you –
and far in the night
you’ll ache
as I do

when crickets forget
the reason they sing
and tides revert
to the sea
I’ll sleep through the winter
with hope
for the spring

I’ll watch every star
realign –
awaiting a memory
of me

a sweeter sun
than e’er I thought
would rise to warm my face
tides are rolled
to bring us home –
far beyond
this place

as another dawn
a twilight red –
a place where life
remembers
where dreams are made
and wanting fades
verses heed no longer

for every truth
denied a place
another yet remains
in silence
words are spoken anyway

whispered into being –
solace of a prayer
this I know
where’er I go –
I was come
to stay

the path is worn
as if o’er time –
the way might be erased
tho flowers bloom each Sunday
after all
midnight yearns
and I have learned –
tis not for me to squander
the hope for one more
morning –
wherever promise falls

each time
I think I might be gone
I find the door ajar –
locks once held the windows
rusted now
lights I thought would never burn
stream a golden pasture
echoes ring
remember me –
should e’er your heart
allow
