age, gifts, home, journey, life, love, memory, seasons, time, truth, what we keep

were there signs
we failed to notice
edges faded gray
words we lost in speaking
as hearts for others
paid

other lives
we left forsaking
what might be our last goodbye
what might wait
beyond the sunset
coral wings
against the night

without fault
without remembrance
lest our days be counted less
than a moment
life was traded –
soul for soul
breath for breath

were there signs
we gave each other
memory carved into the soul
touching places
we were lovers –
coming home
and letting go

blessing, journey, passage, promise, seasons, spirit memory, time, trust, what we keep

until the end
of all we’ve gathered
this my vow
i make to thee
to free my heart
of every wanting –
love that not a tear
shall ease

until the sun
is burned to cinder
spreading heat
across the day
I shall lie awake
til morning –
to pull you in
and beg you stay

until my lips
are words forsaken
coldest night
in which we sleep
I shall dream
your arms around me –
as heaven here
my soul
will keep

breaths between eternities, death, life, love, memorial, memory, moments, soul, story, time

I recently attended a memorial service for my aunt, who has spent the last nine months in some state of ‘coming home’ – from Salt Lake City to Tennessee. It was a wonderful time for sharing stories and memories. And while we might have shared some of them back in March, I found an advantage in the delay – memories and stories unencumbered by the immediate weight of grief.

For me, it meant I could share funny stories without breaking down, speak without a catch in my voice. In response to one story of my uncle’s driving, I noticed at least ten people actually in tears from laughing so hard. My aunt would have loved it!!!!

The minister whispered to me afterward, “I’m growing quite fond of these delayed events.” Maybe it’s the storyteller in me, but I believe it’s because they come at a time when memories aren’t part of what breaks us, but rather part of what is saving us. Perhaps it’s another lesson in perspective, viewing truths through a more compassionate eye.

Personally, I think we could use a bit more of that.

when blue
my ashes fall
on meadows far from here
or drift atop a wave
deep and grey
remember me
another time –
as a wind I came
to you
whispers of forever
given you to save

. . .

wherever love ~

had I more
than stars for wishing
years of standing still
the memory
of falling to the sea
where I slept
within a sunrise
as ten thousand came before
swimming in your eyes
rescue me

had I will
to run or follow –
a step or two behind
beyond the pull
of destiny or sky
tempted by a promise
truth would see me home
lest I wander with
this mystery
called life

had I courage
for surrender –
death to stave again
carried up as leaves
to lay me down
had I faith
to live another life
were this my only plea
come to me
with arms
to wrap around

. . .

beyond the wait ~

courage, grace, life, love, memory, messenger, soul, spirit, time, trust, truth, understanding

when hearths
are warmed
by who we are
beyond the wait
where lanterns sway
beneath an ancient dark
evermore to waste

as time
we could not give
locks already failed
secrets bound together
by the ways
of which we came

had you known
of truths I carried –
a chair beside my bed
a hope
already seated
with my soul
leaving yet to suffer
memory to fill

save for me
a place you love
to love

how I wish
I were immune
to the rising fault of tides
to the shift that
breaks my rhythm
sets my heart adrift
to the strangeness
born of midnight
a voice inside my head
books I’ve long forgotten
lay open on my bed
that I would
this dream remember
like the first
I held of you
when tides were low
moonlight fell
against the pines –
as life I didn’t know
I didn’t know –
a part of me
mistaken for another
left behind

. . .

took the place of memory ~

allowance, desire, grace, life, love, memory, rewritten, seasons, time

were it mine
to offer
a future undefined
light
to ease the edges
of your night
had I wings
the ancient kind
to spread across the skies
might I hold you
captive then –
bound by this
desire

were it now
a life resumed –
come to steal my sleep
took the place
of memory –
burned within a dream
were we more
than once declared
a sigh beneath the timbers
arms still ache
with missing
my heart
was yours –
remember

. . .

by design ~

for graces
I’ve forgotten –
blessing without shame
paths I took
another day –
delivered me
the same

tho now my heart
is loosened
by the weight of
yesterdays
love I held much longer
than choice
to give away

of starry nights
loving arms –
gifted by design
mornings when
another sun
broke through –
a moment of forever
holy mine

a sacred truth
is written here –
to my soul
and on my face
hands I’ve held
names I keep –
as evidence
of grace

and gone, blessings, fleeting, fragile intimacy, life, love, moments, story, time

lest I reach
across the dark
chasing shadows
chasing you
lest I fall
without permission
to be saved
when I speak
of longing scattered
by years
wherein we lay –
might you wonder
of a promised
one more day

lest I sleep
and give our story
to sheets
they never tell
of the ways I came
nights I prayed
for this
lest I dream
and no one notice
what was left behind
of me –
lest my truth be lost
to words
beyond my need

. . .

still to go ~

age, covid, death, fragile days, life beyond our life, moments, reality, seasons, time, truth

what of this
was ever mine –
in living I laid claim
when ages pass
and tears are dried
who will know
my name

how long before
my voice is fade
and every word denied
would that this verse
be written o’er
or washed beneath
the tide

how long have I
a day
a year –
whatever grace allows
to keep what I
am keeping –
names I speak aloud

so many now
the gates are loosed –
tis not for me to know
of dreams beyond
this dreaming –
places still
to go
