promises and gin ~

another dawn
no different
than every day before –
a drink too much
whiskey chased by rain
a letter penned
and folded –
deeper than my fears
a lonely side
of pride
I’ll not complain

keys
and I’ve forgotten
what I cared for
near enough
to lock him up
with promises and gin
negligence by proxy
I can hardly rest
I dare not sleep –
I will not dream
again

by noon
my heart will wonder
what made me feel this way
these hands
will have no memory of us
no warmth where you might linger
a favorite perfume –
pressed into the places
that I love

reinvested as the truth ~

once before
the sun was burnt
against a winter sky –
as snowflakes fell
to hide the path of light
morning woke
within a shade
of charcoal
dust
and shale –
poppies raised
their weary heads
goodnight

prepared to greet
their savior –
a story all but told
how planets carved a path
around the moon
stars succumb
to melting
beneath the evergreens –
lies we reinvested
as the truth

deep within the
stillness
mystery unfurled
as lovers sought the start
of something new
forgotten
to the splendor
of a world turned upside down –
timing slipped
to nothing
we could do

another time
some other life –
a morning much like this
is haunted by a memory
of the one –
a day when flowers drifted
across a winter black
searching out the shadows
for the sun

. . .

“I’ve never loved the wrong person, but I have loved the right people at the wrong time. The wrong life. The wrong moment.”

how could I have known –

the rain
remembers everything
the chill –
the warmth
the sun
she dances on my window
late at night
playing songs
forgotten me –
how could I have known
she shares with me
the memory
of winter’s sweet delight

buckets full
as creeks run o’er –
the river has no bounds
but for home
a lover seeks the sea
banks are lost
beneath the push
of pines against the waves
babies float
as ancients watch
for me

pure the smell
of mystery –
when flushed from neath
the clouds –
longing carved
to every standing stone
music rises
from the pound
of needles to the dirt
sins are lost
this wanting to atone

etchings ~

left as the morning
was dried from the roses
and last night’s confession
absolved by the sun
drove just as heaven
found dirt in Kentucky
yet slowed not the heart
getting on

another night’s rest
much better than last
and nothing much here
to pretend
but I dare not regret
choices once made
or the etch of their work
on my skin

was innocence lost
in the will to believe
– blinders matched to my eyes
was destiny tied
to a white picket fence
anchored by wishes
fell from the sky

another day done
as the truth was set free
sooner or later I lost
the plan to give more
than was mine to conceive
in dreams
I can barely recall

the pillow made dark
by yesterdays’ tears
words in silence replayed
even now
as the last glimpse
of night disappears
shadows fall by the way

is it this I awaited
a long stretch of ache –
of whiskey and wishes
a favorite song
made right
in remembering
the ways we were come
as last night’s confession
absolved by the sun

essence of longing ~

tempt not these eyes
with lust for the river
dried to my feet
by the sand
cursed as I might
the azure blue mountains –
for trust
I was want
to withstand

a blade freshly carved
from a goldenrod meadow
bends round my finger just so
imparting a mystery
my heart
deems to wonder –
on lives polished black
by my soul

I am mist
gathered places –
the essence of longing
as breath come to blush in the spring
oceans are pining
for one more forever –
a page washed away
as I dreamed

. . .

once were words ~

beyond the first
of lifetimes spent –
spread beneath the cedars
a scratch defies the hour
we were born
for what becomes
of moments held above
the worth of others –
a touch
to free the night
we waited on

hold my name
upon your tongue –
as memory of taste
tie it to a story
none can tell
as well as you –
tho time has eased
into another morning –
where once were words
twas there
I loved you well

. . .

if ever ~

if ever
for my words you ache
just listen for the night –
the steady drum
of stars succumb
to heaven chasing light
the cry of crickets
fiddles ring
as shadows round are cast
cedar boughs
forgiven now –
are kneeling on the grass
the stir of
night birds waking
to find another song
things I might have told you
– they will hold you
when I’m gone

. . .

if you are going ~

take me with
if you are going
somewhere closer to the sun –
where a lonely ache
for living
shall carry us
as one

a story
not yet written –
bears the memory of change
so I’ll hold your hand
for whatever truth
remains

let it keep
beyond the leaving
for all the world to see
how it was
the path remembered
as you waited time
for me

silver mine ~

I shall gather
to pages
these remnants of you
reminders now written
in rhyme
I shall paint
every moment
of days worn together –
warm cappucine
silver mine

sweet
my surrender
so often and still
when shadows are come
to do as they will
I will bind my heart
to words
we both know –
whispers carved deep
to my soul
