let me be
until I fade
ragged edges flecked
with blue
a memory reliant
as unstable
let me be
shake me from these ashes
rattle with my bones
til a song emerges
cleanly
as one you know
let me be
til I am lost –
til I am
found

once
when there was nothing else
I held you –
soft against my stutter
til you became
more of me remembered
than e’er my heart
could hold
quiet as dawn
upon the snow
then I was leaving
o’er and o’er again
leaving you
with everything I ever
knew to be
quiet in the sky
beyond the stars
you waited
til I was gone –
I could hear you
in the pines
in the quiet desperation
of wings against the night
pressed into the ether
my stutter
my surprise
was to find you once again
forgotten why I left
let me stay
remembering the wonder
of why I came

a hand to hold, aligned, all I know, always we begin, awareness, been found, carry me home, closer to heaven than the stars, life, love, spirit

was never meant
to feign desire –
as years I put behind
of hands to fit
the same remorse as mine –
tis not so far
til I am found –
I’ve searched most all my days
for home I knew
awaited –
was more than just
a place

19 Wednesday May 2021

time is but a careless lover
longing left
beneath the skin
pretty words
are proof of nothing –
destinies let loose
again
breath
resolved to indecision
– forsaken every want to feel
a choice to go
a need to linger
futures spent
in standing still
soundless cries
as silence whispers –
to ease the hurt
once feared the heart
mourning comes to steal forever
left to chance
the sweetest part
would the calm delay
my going –
ten thousand lives
before we end
time is but a careless lover –
longing trapped
beneath my skin

all I really know, and still, before we understood, blessing, grace, life, love, naked truth, poetry, wealth, wildflowers

a golden stem
a temple bell –
an altar I have raised
tis here I bow
and here I place my hands
in prayer for place
for circumstance
would give your song to me
to fill a grand cathedral
and bring me
to my knees
a poem without rhyme
is all I have to bring
lines are naked
verses without shame
senses now awakened
to moments lived
apart
graces I have taken –
I have taken
in your name
walls of deepest cedar
floors are warped
by tears –
as holy once the wine
we passed between
the lips that mouthed surrender
tongue where truth
is grieved
love when there is nothing
would cleave your breath
from me

there are mornings
unimagined
worlds denied a map –
lands these hands
have wandered far to know
paths and constellations
arms to wrap around –
traces of a place
remains of home
a story worth repeating
as memory of grace
to see the moon
reflected in your eyes
clover made to blanket
blooms beyond the barn
I want to feel heaven
as I rise

all we've known to love, almost always, and still, another time, essential truth, life, love, remembered anew

our time
resolved
with but a word
stay
and I again
remembered this
the notion of a dream
ashes
I could never hold
the promise
of a kiss

when comes the day
might be the last
of all the times between
wherever stars align
as fate revealed
when mellow
seems to be
the only way I know
to be…
when lonely wakes
to find the bed
is gone
when every plate is broken
and all my pages
bare
when light
that filled the porch
has worn away
to meld again with shadow
of a time before I knew
a day beyond our last
would come
to claim the rest
of you

had I means for stopping
a way to end all ways –
a time to stall
to take my fill and leave
untouched by a door
still closing
no backward glance reprieve
had there been but one
surrender
would it have followed me
from the moment
I first noticed –
how stars became your eyes
was there I floated
flailing
the sweetest bird
the darkest skies
had I known
had I noticed
when first tempted into flight
might I have changed
direction –
taken chances
with goodbye
