in the hush
between seasons
heaven concedes
the fragile convergence
of story to wings
a wordless reminder
of some other life
where all that we kept
was an allegiance
to sky –
a thread
weaving darkness
to light

once
when there was nothing else
I held you –
soft against my stutter
til you became
more of me remembered
than e’er my heart
could hold
quiet as dawn
upon the snow
then I was leaving
o’er and o’er again
leaving you
with everything I ever
knew to be
quiet in the sky
beyond the stars
you waited
til I was gone –
I could hear you
in the pines
in the quiet desperation
of wings against the night
pressed into the ether
my stutter
my surprise
was to find you once again
forgotten why I left
let me stay
remembering the wonder
of why I came

there are mornings
unimagined
worlds denied a map –
lands these hands
have wandered far to know
paths and constellations
arms to wrap around –
traces of a place
remains of home
a story worth repeating
as memory of grace
to see the moon
reflected in your eyes
clover made to blanket
blooms beyond the barn
I want to feel heaven
as I rise

all we've known to love, flowers, home, nature, reminders, seasons, spirit memory, time, truth

in the place
where winter stood –
red magnolia blooms
and not so far away
I have wandered
waiting for spring
a serenade of flowers
purple blushed with umber streaks
floating seas of sage

there’s truth
we scarce consider –
and one we dare not speak
a normal found
in courage lost –
a darkness not so deep
I’ve kept my word
in seeking –
for a path I knew before
hearts undone
by telling –
a truth I waited for
sometimes
the dream falls open –
as I wander with the night
beyond the risk of losing –
to a place of love
and light
when tempted I
by sorrows
for every hurt embraced –
moments of surrender
turn my wanting
into grace

thirty miles
is not so far
tho less along the fences
lines already drawn
from heart to home
the road curves back
beside a creek
I remember once you held me –
the water was so cold
I cried for days
there’s a weathered bridge
a leaning barn
winter wheat and locust
boxes stand as one
their flags aloft
afternoons
the sun wears low
enough to reconsider
how many loves
forsaken to this road
cadillacs
and beat up trucks –
drift along the shoulder
pass without a curse
without a pause –
a fleeting recognition
of someone
once you loved
can’t see the tears
beyond the years
can’t say I’ve had enough
of honeysuckle
gravel roads
heaven spread before
weeds have bound
my thirsty heart
to yours
thirty miles
is not so far
lest I lose my way –
wait the creek to rise
would take me home

as morning calls
and breakfast burns –
wings prepare
to soar
flushed from arms
of safety
into the blue
once more
I understand
for every plan –
there’s a way
we remember as home
a name succumbed
to silence
tis the sweetest one
I know
no matter the distance
tis none I fear
for reasons I cannot explain
sometimes I sleep
sometimes I dream –
sometimes
it is there
I remain

I have bartered
with the darkness –
wrapped myself in light
courting with shadows
– rolled beyond the hands
of night
I have loved
when there was nothing
worth surrender
to confess –
finding strength
to face another
calm to ease
my soul’s unrest
found a means
for moving onward
in search of destiny –
I have loved
and hesitated
for a truth
I couldn’t see
without remorse
for having wanted –
I was never far from home
I have waded
in the waters
cold and dark –
a lover’s stone
. . .

when the mountains
succumb to the weight
of their worries
and rivers return
to their source
when the sun stays aloft
in wait for her moon
will I have forsaken
the story of us
when all becomes one
I will be you –
and far in the night
you’ll ache
as I do
when crickets forget
the reason they sing
and tides revert
to the sea
I’ll sleep through the winter
with hope
for the spring
I’ll watch every star
realign –
awaiting a memory
of me
