fingerprints ~

if e’er I wrote
without your name –
or felt an ache
beneath each rhyme
I’d find you still
your fingerprints –
pressed
along my spine

but for words
I’d trade my pen –
and lay aside
attempts at grace
for once I drew
my fate with yours
along and down
an anxious page

tis not enough
to speak aloud –
for silence now
the truth will speak
as breath between
ten thousand sighs
more than I thought
could be

. . .

which way ~

how far
from where you left me –
are there traces to be found
broken twigs
whispers
marks upon the ground

places
I may find you –
lest I search beyond the veil
for the path you took
and there my heart
as well

branches bent
to block the sun –
winter wheat to ash
no one keeps your memory
and I can’t bear to ask

which way
the moon will follow
to find a promise made
past the barn
down the night –
another once we lay

how far
from where you left me
are there traces to be found

. . .

missing ~

somewhere I know
you’re missing me –
I feel it in my bones
thick as blood
the curse of love
some other to atone

some other truth
an ageless lie –
to me they taste the same
as chicory to brandy –
memory to flame

somewhere
there is no faulting –
or life to intercede
somewhere
we sleep as one
in fields of green

beyond the reach
of wanting –
for another hand to hold
somewhere
the heart remembers
how I miss you
in my soul

. . .

sworn to find ~

I have bartered
with the darkness –
wrapped myself in light
courting with shadows
– rolled beyond the hands
of night

I have loved
when there was nothing
worth surrender
to confess –
finding strength
to face another
calm to ease
my soul’s unrest

found a means
for moving onward
in search of destiny –
I have loved
and hesitated
for a truth
I couldn’t see

without remorse
for having wanted –
I was never far from home
I have waded
in the waters
cold and dark –
a lover’s stone

. . .

mourned by the tides ~

I shall wait
in this place –
where worlds fall together
will count every crest as a sigh
adrift on the currents –
of heron and gull
pulled by the wind
mourned
by the tides

I shall breathe in
the essence
of ten thousand stories –
old weathered sailors
long linen sails
I shall watch
from this moment
where nations have crumbled
waiting on love
to prevail

I shall watch
from the dunes
as midday surrenders
as the sun gathers tears
from the sea
drunk from the swirling
of Orion’s cup –
eternity turned
home to me

. . .

memory of me ~

when the mountains
succumb to the weight
of their worries
and rivers return
to their source
when the sun stays aloft
in wait for her moon
will I have forsaken
the story of us

when all becomes one
I will be you –
and far in the night
you’ll ache
as I do

when crickets forget
the reason they sing
and tides revert
to the sea
I’ll sleep through the winter
with hope
for the spring

I’ll watch every star
realign –
awaiting a memory
of me

. . .

survived the falling ~

from the coming back
for going ~
for lessons learned between
for lives that never knew
where grace has been

let these
these mortal yearnings –
flow as sand before the grail
as words survived the falling
another soul to tell

will then
the fond aroma
of a meadow fresh with bloom
fill my heart with longing –
my breath with
sweet perfume

lest I plead myself
another ~
or declare a final truce
to come when spring is over
and I’ve forgotten you

. . .

not a poet ~

paint my blush
as roses –
my kiss
a cherry wine
fill me with your story –
and I shall give you
mine

a painter
not a poet –
a writer made to bleed
take my ears
so they might learn
the ways you came
for me

steal my breath
my every word
verse I thought to pen
take of rhyme surrendered
– and write it
to my skin

paint my dreams
by candle –
my morning with your smile
leave the stars
to wonder
where we go
