silver swords
pierce the soil
and rise to dwarf the clover
purple sashes wrap
to slender legs
branches bent by evergreen
are pressed against the bloom
of sycamore and dogwood
ancient plum with weed
yet all I feel
as breezes blow
is a reminder to allow
a story here becoming
what I’ve read
and what I know –
how their fragrance
fills my senses
with the memory of snow –
of last September
maples swirling
just beyond my bed –
as falling leaves surrendered
to habits of regret
for harvests lost
as lessons found –
how it was we came
to touch the sweetest season
yet love them all
the same

I’ve been warned
there is a dreamer
rests beneath my collar bone
spends the night
curled beneath me –
a fiery furnace made of stone
sometimes words can resurrect us
from all we loved
all we know –
of the joys recalled in living
hand to heart
soul to soul

in the leaves
I hear the ocean
silent strumming on the shore
as I walk the beach at sunrise
I feel the trees like ne’er before
one remains
and one remembers
where is home
and what I keep
of the blessings that surround me
broken seashells
velvet leaves

do you remember your first
brave walk on the shore
– the rush of a wave
rolling thru

do you remember the sound
of a dove soaring high
– racing the breeze
on a shimmer of blue

do you remember the day
the returning of love
– a lifetime or more
to begin

do you remember the want
a passion to know
– how fleeting the hours
since then

do you remember my name
the taste on your tongue –
a story forsaken
by time

do you remember the way
I willed you to come
do you remember
the ways
you were mine

I confess
once you knew me
not as sure you know me now
when years have passed
my story changing –
and what of love
I dreamed about

might I stay
e’er you would listen
had I words and time to tell
of paths I took
of fate diverging –
far from ways
you knew me well

dare I speak
of sorrows tasted
recall anew a broken heart
remnants of a love
imagined –
when evermore
was not that far

do you miss the ache
of my hand in yours
another day –
my head against your heart
when darkness falls
unwilling
to the soul that waited long
will you feel my love
settled with you
there

as more than touch
more than breath returning
more than words
rewritten to your skin
wherever time
was promised
let it be as it has been
a place
where love remembered
wakes again

feel the warmth
this tender ache
my hand within your hand
a falling rain
of memories persist
where once
is still –
a dream recalled
my head against your heart
awaiting us a lifetime
such as this

of the ways I came
and here before –
you waited my arrival
kept the candle lit
beyond the cursing sun
wishing now
a welcome home
without the need for blaming
without the want to understand
the reason I was gone

no want for tears
we gave them all
and kicked the boards
for crying –
swore to never love
if love were true
passed a night (or more than one)
without a word between us –
spent the chill of winter
wide awake
and back to back

I wondered
as to moments –
longest time
til I would go –
how much of this
was more than fate –
to prove it wasn’t easy
years from love we loved
before the first
we came too late

straight back chairs
empty lockets –
swore the stars to secret
I left a crumpled note
beneath the bed
planted corn between the
vines –
and waited yellow roses
marked the ways
you knew me
one by lonely one

in the swell of the tide
a breath before rising –
in the roll of the sands
neath the shore
I’ve noticed the rivers
run deeper than blood –
and the trees
taller still than before

I’ve reckoned the sun
how she leans to the right
when no one is watching
but me
how she warms to my skin
as home she remembers –
a lantern set high
on the sea

sometimes morning
awakens the night –
with whispers of promise undone
prickled by weeds
berries and blossom –
fireflies skimming
the pond

bitterly sweet
scattered transgressions –
as who for another
moment would trade
dust from a memory
of life as we knew –
to wait for a night
in the shade

I am the road
an evening sunset –
left to burn
against your brow
I am the memory
of other summers –
where life began anew
somehow

I am breath
I am October –
a field of reds
where heaven grew
I am words
tho never uttered
I am life
returned for you

another me
as seasons follow
within the count
of death to days –
I am love
I will not falter
where’re the heart
my truth remains

get me to singing
like some old guitar
a bit of boards straining
for tune –
the one you played
remember that time –
chords and crescendos
of me wanting you

get me
to forever
we swore there would be
feather beds
wrapped
with cotton sheets
long nights passed
with but a whisper between –
summer smiles
and kisses –
an old porch swing

get me
to sunrise
without worry for sleep –
questions
for all this love means
move me
to make you –
these lips to beg you
stay
silent reminders
to breathe

I’ve been waiting
out the winter –
for another sweet hello
as headlights press
the darkness like a ghost
there’s a map
inside my dresser –
silver lines against the blue
doesn’t matter
where we start
if I’m with you

my faith
is resurrected –
at the whisper of your name
a sigh of signs
and still my heart obeys
I can’t recall
the reasons
or how many roads
between
all I know is
all I need
to breathe again

the locks were never changed
to fit another
no plans for getting on
for getting by
don’t let the time it takes
be all that matters –

the sun still waits
all morning
for the night
