retrospect
leaves longing
dying in the dust
waiting for a drink
of sunday morn
the taste of everafter
will singe the devil’s tongue –
with want for life
we pressed against –
the hope for
things undone
there are no words
I’ve tried them all –
and made a few my own
folded verses
into maps –
so sure they’d take me
home
of ways
the heart remembers –
a name among the scars
how could we want
for heaven –
and still not see
the stars

to wonder
have I
with only my sight
to remember
the place
I began
with a wish
cast to darkness
and the taste
of your name
robbed me of sleep
swept as a sigh
to somewhere
in space
not far from your rest
clinging to whispers
saved not for one
tis there
I am home
moored by a star
flanked by the memory
of where I become
a voice
awake in your dream

I will search
on fertile banks
where marigold is nestled
startled by the rivers
loyalty

I shall reach
for tiny crescents
buried by the sand –
in broken trusts
twisted with my hair
I will wait
as I have waited
for the time
to find you there

did I tell you once
of paths I roamed
unknowing
with a dream
suffered want unholy
to dream again –
I shall wait

as nights
beyond the wandering
in places
I have feared
in afternoons
where sunlight comes
to play

there are mornings
unimagined
worlds denied a map –
lands these hands
have wandered far to know
paths and constellations
arms to wrap around –
traces of a place
remains of home

a story worth repeating
as memory of grace
to see the moon
reflected in your eyes
clover made to blanket
blooms beyond the barn
I want to feel heaven
as I rise

had I means for stopping
a way to end all ways –
a time to stall
to take my fill and leave
untouched by a door
still closing
no backward glance reprieve
had there been but one
surrender
would it have followed me

from the moment
I first noticed –
how stars became your eyes
was there I floated
flailing
the sweetest bird
the darkest skies
had I known
had I noticed
when first tempted into flight
might I have changed
direction –
taken chances
with goodbye

there’s truth
we scarce consider –
and one we dare not speak
a normal found
in courage lost –
a darkness not so deep

I’ve kept my word
in seeking –
for a path I knew before
hearts undone
by telling –
a truth I waited for

sometimes
the dream falls open –
as I wander with the night
beyond the risk of losing –
to a place of love
and light

when tempted I
by sorrows
for every hurt embraced –
moments of surrender
turn my wanting
into grace

how far
from where you left me –
are there traces to be found
broken twigs
whispers
marks upon the ground

places
I may find you –
lest I search beyond the veil
for the path you took
and there my heart
as well

branches bent
to block the sun –
winter wheat to ash
no one keeps your memory
and I can’t bear to ask

which way
the moon will follow
to find a promise made
past the barn
down the night –
another once we lay

how far
from where you left me
are there traces to be found
