had i time
enough
to make the best –
years beyond these rings
a moment undecided
by the way
the nightbird sings
a road too long
to get me back –
a broken stand
of pines
had i days
to resurrect –
one more morning
to ascribe
breath where mine
was stolen
i remember
had i grace
to give in trade –
an evermore
to save
would my pleasure come
in counting
every kiss where
we align
would i wait
another day
to make you
mine

in the breath
where memory hides
you are there
on sundays
when the paper comes
as i lean into the light
where first you arrived
warmth on my face –
my need
to embrace
whatever is come
whatever is made
of us
when the reasons
all fall away
my smile can no longer
suffer the ache
to know where you stood
at the edge
of one day
at the fringe
where darkness
covered in light –
awaited my breath
to return

past the leaving –
far beyond the night
when dust
finds the moon
i shiver
sometimes
to remember the way
you surrendered
my name
in the dark
before dawn stirred to life
seventeen
i was then
when i loved
you the first
i shall wait
past the waking –
for years yet to be
til eternity comes
as a voice
on the breeze
to remember me home
to arms
opened wide
i shall wait
for a lifetime –
this moment
to find

how much of me
still wonders
at this place
we’ve come to be
how many years –
miles
we put behind
how much will i remember
when my days
are all but done
will i recall the light
found burning
in your eyes
remember me
this destiny
when all the rest are gone
fields of ash
winter wheat mistaken
let for this
another grieve
how i loved you so
saved my heart
from wondering
for long

the creek was gone
weeds to hide the barn
a falling down
as rivers from the sky
miles beyond
remember this
solace of surrender
silence sworn
to distances between

lives
hastened by a truth
someone stole
my heart
and let me live
loved beneath
the jealous eyes
of jupiter and mars
gathered as a moment

As promise given
soul to soul –
as sunlight to the shadows –
would for the truth
I burst into a flame –
and leave my mark of cinder –
charcoal
memories etched –

How could I know
the rest of me
was you

Before the past
is ever passed
as futures to uncover –
a moment there
pretending not to be –
A breath in time
but I confess
forever stretched to fill it –
leaving thought
to guard the days
between

Eternity –
a place began
by whispers sworn to silence
Dare I speak
and hear your voice again

Words can never garner
a story so familiar –
you close your eyes
and I resign to sleep
