if I
were but a dreamer
with verse my only trade
worn to breath –
from living unafraid
I’d lose my way to letting
give it all
if you’d be mine
I’d set my course
and watch the night for signs
for another blest assurance
of places we have been
a promise left
if e’er we lived again
for each night
beyond a lifetime –
for planets not yet named
silver skies
alight with holy flame

how far
from where you left me –
are there traces to be found
broken twigs
whispers
marks upon the ground

places
I may find you –
lest I search beyond the veil
for the path you took
and there my heart
as well

branches bent
to block the sun –
winter wheat to ash
no one keeps your memory
and I can’t bear to ask

which way
the moon will follow
to find a promise made
past the barn
down the night –
another once we lay

how far
from where you left me
are there traces to be found

I have bartered
with the darkness –
wrapped myself in light
courting with shadows
– rolled beyond the hands
of night

I have loved
when there was nothing
worth surrender
to confess –
finding strength
to face another
calm to ease
my soul’s unrest

found a means
for moving onward
in search of destiny –
I have loved
and hesitated
for a truth
I couldn’t see

without remorse
for having wanted –
I was never far from home
I have waded
in the waters
cold and dark –
a lover’s stone

from the coming back
for going ~
for lessons learned between
for lives that never knew
where grace has been

let these
these mortal yearnings –
flow as sand before the grail
as words survived the falling
another soul to tell

will then
the fond aroma
of a meadow fresh with bloom
fill my heart with longing –
my breath with
sweet perfume

lest I plead myself
another ~
or declare a final truce
to come when spring is over
and I’ve forgotten you

a sweeter sun
than e’er I thought
would rise to warm my face
tides are rolled
to bring us home –
far beyond
this place

as another dawn
a twilight red –
a place where life
remembers
where dreams are made
and wanting fades
verses heed no longer

for every truth
denied a place
another yet remains
in silence
words are spoken anyway

whispered into being –
solace of a prayer
this I know
where’er I go –
I was come
to stay

silver swords
pierce the soil
and rise to dwarf the clover
purple sashes wrap
to slender legs
branches bent by evergreen
are pressed against the bloom
of sycamore and dogwood
ancient plum with weed
yet all I feel
as breezes blow
is a reminder to allow
a story here becoming
what I’ve read
and what I know –
how their fragrance
fills my senses
with the memory of snow –
of last September
maples swirling
just beyond my bed –
as falling leaves surrendered
to habits of regret
for harvests lost
as lessons found –
how it was we came
to touch the sweetest season
yet love them all
the same

between
the planting
and the bud –
how much more have we made room
how many sleepless nights
the harvest pulls
a prayer for something grander
than e’er we dared believe
orchards stretched beyond
the wishful eye

another day
when someone else
who never knew to know our name
bends beneath the weight
of fullness come

a poet holds the stillness
day before the dawn
scratching at a page
that can’t be seen –
set on some imaginary soul
in search of word
ten thousand years
another heart
to mend

whatever we have left
of days we numbered soon
of dreams denied the dreamer
a sliver of the moon
time becomes the shape
of everything we once believed
the sound of words
as falling fruit –
apples to the ground

she takes her poison
after tea –
before her evening shows
she spins around
the kitchen
and wonders
if he knows

how much of her
remains with him
despite the miles between
how much of her
is captive
to his dreams

once she starred
in color
almost every night
he whispered
while the coffee brewed
for he loved to see her smile

she knows the way
she counts the ways –
every stone by heart
as steps beyond the barn
into the dark

naked feet on hardwood
face against the door –
staring down the darkness
with faith in something more

how much of life is taken
by the breath
that bears us home
a name that tastes the same
is ours alone
