verse remains
to fill my days
mornings
without you
evidence of movement
to grieve the weight
of touch
another time
what value this
the trade
the rub
the reason
stories laid
beneath the lands
you love
. . .

had I more
than stars for wishing
years of standing still
the memory
of falling to the sea
where I slept
within a sunrise
as ten thousand came before
swimming in your eyes
rescue me
had I will
to run or follow –
a step or two behind
beyond the pull
of destiny or sky
tempted by a promise
truth would see me home
lest I wander with
this mystery
called life
had I courage
for surrender –
death to stave again
carried up as leaves
to lay me down
had I faith
to live another life
were this my only plea
come to me
with arms
to wrap around
. . .
25 Wednesday Aug 2021
in the blush
before twilight falls
on stars I know by name
tis there
a sigh unguarded
you remain
in light
before the sun arrives
to sit
atop my barn
in breezes come
a whisper
through the pines
tis there
amid the places –
I’ve decided
I can bear
souvenirs of all
I thought
to love
with breath
before dreams return
as shadows
shape the night –
as story
not yet told
you remain
. . .

I’m certain
there’s a place
you can’t reach
inside my soul –
another thousand miles
beyond your touch
a story not yet traded
for somewhere we begin –
destiny or fate
not soon enough
I drew a map one Friday
and left before the sun
could gather up your dreams
to make them mine
before my heart remembered
all the ways
you fit me well
how much of me
is traces left behind
for every truth
some mystery –
to ease the days between
moments yet to ponder
why we came
for every start
where evermore has written
us more time –
seasons pass
doubts are rolled away
. . .
09 Monday Aug 2021

had i reason
to remember –
a map that held my name
roads I never traveled
feel the distance
just the same
when lights are low
and you are there
awaiting
my return
i hear your voice
sometimes –
feel your presence
with the dawn
sometimes i swear
you linger in the shadows
of my lawn
a smile
I’ve ne’er forgotten
my kiss still
on your lips
had i something
left to barter –
weathered poetry
writ down
the memory of somewhere
we remain
we are found
beyond the reach of never
close enough to now
waiting still the way
would bring you
home
. . .

family, grace, living, love, secrets, sometimes, story, the part you never knew, truths, who i was before I was, writing in the dark

granny kept his secrets
until the day she died –
surrendered with her breath
every want
to question why
some stories flow a river
beginning at the end
til all we have is what became
of places we have been
tis why the nightbird cries
remembering her song
– what man became my father
when mama came along
I hold my demons closer
than words I dare not speak
truths that weigh much more
than you love me
for every doubt
another waits
to claim the life between
who I was before I was –
dreams I dream
for every secret traded
there are some I’ll never tell
– why granny kept her boots
in the woods
beyond the well

from slumber
I am taken –
lest my dreams
return for me
lest my covers ache
the essence
of my sin
when the moon is perched
along the southern eve
let him weep
let him find me distant
find me gone
succumb to all was
missing –
surrendered not to fate
one more day
I dare not spend it now
steal me from
the cool embrace
of sheets just off the line
shatter my
allegiance
to the night

24 Thursday Jun 2021

from a moment
unwritten
the way is derived
every hello put to test
paths through
the mystery
of all my tomorrows
a place
not the same
I confess
evidence comes
as tender reminders
of somewhere
someone
speaks my name
witness to bear
lifetimes for seeking
love I have carried
from the place
I remain
. . .
08 Tuesday Jun 2021

were not for words
would you remember me here
fashioned in lines
of surrender
would you know
how it feels
when sunlight is burned
and curtains fall
from my windows
I see you
I know you –
how sweet this refrain
of birth without knowing
how far
I have come
from a day like no other
splinters of light
are pooled into places
we carry the same
moments
I dare not to speak
. . .

once
when there was nothing else
I held you –
soft against my stutter
til you became
more of me remembered
than e’er my heart
could hold
quiet as dawn
upon the snow
then I was leaving
o’er and o’er again
leaving you
with everything I ever
knew to be
quiet in the sky
beyond the stars
you waited
til I was gone –
I could hear you
in the pines
in the quiet desperation
of wings against the night
pressed into the ether
my stutter
my surprise
was to find you once again
forgotten why I left
let me stay
remembering the wonder
of why I came
