when once
you were mine
with permission for more
than ever one lifetime
could hold
come back
you forgave me
for times surely gone
live while your love
is still young
wait as i pleaded
another some day
would grant us the grace
of time in this place
allowing my heart
to beat next to yours
wait
and i’ll come back
to find you
stay while my lips
know your name

do you remember
sleep we traded
for one more chance at love
a garden grew
in shadows of the barn
hearts for holding memory
promising our best –
would gather
every season
waited on
once before
i stood my ground
and put my maps away –
starlings black before the sun
could bake
dressed in purple flannel
i willed the stars collide
begging please
upon my knees –
another dream
to wake
longing keeps
no record –
of years betrayed
to moments here
curved against your spine –
a willing spoon
do you remember
how i worried
each time you tempted fate
trusting of our fortunes
to the moon

coffee left stains
on the floor
where I knelt
burning my secrets
away
echoes
are scattered
high on a shelf
where once I kept photos
pieces of us
stored without thought
to where we might be –
or how far the stars
still to fall

forever is more telling

i get busy

pass before
i realize

there’s been no change
in weather –
predictions
of a jealous moon
moved to retribution
by shadows come

twilight glows
as fear
