whatever was
so misconstrued
how was I to ever
hang my heart on magic –
endear my trust to lies
whatever loss
might I confess
to moments
so enduring –
as those who came
who left without goodbye

should history
remember me
to something less
romantic –
a purple bruise
beneath a jaded sky
scripted as
a sleepless night –
burdened by my longing
with memories
of memory –
and ne’er a tear
to cry

. . .

not with words ~

remember me spring

there’s an field
beyond our seeking –
a place where we belong
the life we dreamed
no less
for living
another one

there’s a want
beyond the waking –
of winter wheat
and purple sword
where longing flows
the sweetest honey –
yet not
with words

there’s a silence
to all that matters
lest we grieve
for signs we missed
a truth we cannot speak of –
a promise
or a kiss

there’s a moment
I’ve heard tell –
blinding sunlight
of time displaced –
where love begins again
as always
from a memory
retraced

day begins at night

keep the burn ablaze
make for me a place –
I will come to home
and breathe
of all I know
in this
and each beginning –
each returning to reveal
of ways we thought
were learning us
alone
keep the fire
say my name
into each misty morn
write my soul
to cedar –
to pages of your own
keep my place
as love becomes
a memory of futures cast
real as dreams
we prayed aloud –
into the sweet
unknown

night whispers

you could call it love
tho I might deem it something else –
an urgency shared
with an ancient moon
pressed into memory –
as evidence of fate
a need unresolved
longing so old
I’ve almost forgotten
how it feels
to be remembered

a light on the porch, all I know of living, family, give it up, life. rememberance, lifetimes, longing, love, poet, returning home

for every time
forgotten you
the road between
begun
and counted for my worries
every mile
for cares
I thought it mattered
now it seems I’ve lost my way
returning your
remembrance
as a smile

a verse or two
maybe three or four
as meter met
with rhyme
stories we were telling
on the way
sits the same
an unlined page
fevered fight with time
how few the poet knows
have less to say

places still
my soul recalls
the miracle of pen
as hush before a poem
we appear
crowded vowels rewritten
backward to my hands
words are given voice
tho none can hear

softlynow

how tender this
the end begins –
from stems
are petals longing
reaching toward the water
tears
we dared to dream
yesterday
reminders of a wish
no longer new
a promise once removed –
from all
the heart
has left

. . .

heaven has forgotten us ~

home

morning waits
to fill the ache –
where once I held your heart
shadows cleft between
the dusk and day
reminders of my sorrow –
threads I’ve pulled apart
memories
to keep my dreams
awake

verses tend
my longing –
as curses rise to fall
photographs of photographs
a promise yet unmade
what heaven
has forgotten us
moments spent this way –
near enough to witness
the loss
of yesterday

. . .

alonewithme

I’m not the one
you brag about
the open hand –
the heart
where once you lay
your weary head
emptied it of dreams

from knowing
everything and none
the weight of silent truths –
the sheets still warm
recall the sun
as I remember you

as yesterday
ten thousand more
the hooded blue of dusk
a thread to break
within the breeze –
as letters meant
for us

dreamy

solace
wears a mask of grief
home – a time began
where reaching back
too often
I am found
mesmerized by everything
let my soul embrace
the tender touch
no matter now
how brief

sorrow
knows of other times
of joys
too big
my heart to spare
of wonders
we shall know again –
bliss (o sweet)
forever shared

evening
sits in shadow
where once the morning
sun
was burned
love remains
the proof of life –
beyond the still
a moment
yearned

onceuponame

busy me
with breathing
broken vine
of write me down
strain
to tell (again)

these stories I’m become
(the memory)
of tears
shed to seed the
only morning after

where thunder –
silent strumming
tho none (but one) can hear
wings against this waking
remind my soul
(commit my heart)
to dream

night birds
just beyond the reach
of reaching (into day)
secrets
sworn to flannel
rest beneath my
willing

words
(where none
are needed)
beyond what love
can say
