never ~

whatever more
is still to find –
would trade
of these – familiar days
to know the heat
of one more kiss
a mouth –
would every fear
erase

I’ve heard it said
I know tis true
the painter seeks
with words to paint –
a poet dreams
in colors
not her own
music works against
the fist
to soothe
a restless lover –
nights belong
safe within a song

for one more
brutal shade of red –
a stem of verse
to pacify
creation swells against
the brush –
with ne’er a thought
to words denied

where once I lay me down ~

are there lines
across your heart
where once I lay me down
a memory of warmth
against your skin
I was here
just the same
to return most every night
when red is fallen
soft along the ridge
are there pieces
still to missing –
I have wondered now
again
down the roads
ten thousand miles
afraid
were I to call
would you hear me
sweeter than before –
a crush
of velvet wings
amidst the trees

wanting still for words ~

what solace –
words
when grief
has stayed
to steal the warmth
from tender lips
was yesterday a prayer
a goodbye kiss
cold –
a sure reminder
of flame
where passions burned
into the sheets –
ashes now remain
who would blame
this heart to ache
these arms –
they tremble so
wanting still for words
that cannot warm –
that will not hold

tenderness to taste ~

were not for this
divine resolve –
will that wanted more than I
could ever fill
while standing –
or raised on toes
the shade of mine
to offer up
my only kiss
to lips that seemed
a kinder fate
another time
a single need
for one more
tenderness to taste
eternity
may stretch beyond
a field of golden
here my soul –
were not for this
my smile was saved
some other breath
for mine
to hold

recollections ~

sometimes
it seems that easy
the want to push away
thoughts of you
reminders
not mistaken
how afternoons could wane
a golden blissful heat
beyond the fence
anchored to my dreams

when I’ve forgotten
everything
I thought I knew to know
how deep
these recollections
bury me
how many dawns denied
that i would leave
the heart i love
married to a truth
i never thought
too much
would show

sometimes
it seems so easy
to forget the ways
i’ve come
beyond the fence
where once i fell
too far
to get me home

. . .

remember me this way ~

when i have gone
and save for one remembered
a failing light
one fragile night
alignment just like this
fates resigned
roads erased
and not a map was made
would bring me back
the way
that you remember
me
this way
when evening slips
to twilight
there your laughter sleeps
cupped within the timbers
ancient evergreens
i will wait
the nightbird’s singing
until the morning dawns
when dew has fallen
quiet
to the place
where i have gone

. . .

back to this ~

i wasn’t meant
for waiting –
another sun
some other life
never raced ahead
to find the end
where I began
tis all for me
this mystery
of now
and here we are
floating on an
ancient emerald sea
touching
barely touching
your voice above the tide
fingers tangled
warmth around my own
whispers of direction
as rivers
you are come
back to this –
sweet memory
all I know
of home

. . .

fearful of flame ~

before I was come
were you but a memory
of a place where we lay
one with the night
pressed with a promise
to evergreen needles
preparing our hearts
a moment to rise
before I was grace
I was want for no more
than the sound
of your breathing
the warmth of your face
skin robbing skin
of all that was mattered
lips barely touching
fearful of flame
before I was nothing
who were you wanting
when back through
the madness –
you wandered so far
to dream
our beginning
from a whispered confession
a prayerful
remember
forgiving
us now

before I was come
were you but a memory
