reason slips
a negligee
of bloom across
the floor
a lowly sigh
of lullabye
beckons me
once more
as firelight
and where was I
before the heavens
gleamed
another me
made famous
in your dreams

I remember well
the season –
mercury and venus
a watchful moon
still takes my breath away
counting time by wishes
made for one another
whispers
folded round us –
stay
I’ve reached the age
where years no longer matter –
fissures to a dream
another page
moments I remember
a proprietary weakness –
I pass the field
we loved in
every day

lord knows
the fields are empty now –
by summer burned away
and I wonder
do you miss
the tender nights
do you think about
forever –
a sunrise such as this
when clouds compete –
a winter quilt
july
do you dream
without permission
awake within a sigh –
stumble out of ribbons
to the porch
do you speak of me
into the still
where morning waits
the night
do you watch
the road –
and curse the moving on

last night
the dream of falling
pulled me from my sleep
dizzy as a moth
by vapor stained
haunted by a promise
just before
I fell
an echo spun
of silent wonderings
last night
the dream of falling
pulled me from my sleep
dizzy as a moth
by vapor stained

had i words
or better still
a garden overgrown –
with story not so different
from your own
names and holy places
are but scratches
to the stone –
a faraway beginning
to a life
as yet unknown

I will
indulge in fits of madness
sign my name
to sacred scrolls –
never once resolve my longing
to a slate of normal
rules
I will
sit the night in silence
just beyond the reach of voice
I’ll sing
while others chatter –
far too long
on foolish choice
I will
pray tho no one listens
shedding skin
that none can see –
come awake
in shades of honey
daffodil
and evergreen

once
between collisions
we dared to trace the stars
and cursed aloud
for years the passing on
wishes burnt to cinder
aren’t all to matter now
how much we dreamed
remains a distant light
beyond the shift
where shadows hide –
I worry for you there
will you still hold
my secrets –
the flame
that warms my soul

the daylight
grows dimmer
with every october
tho the nightbirds sing louder
this spring
a reminder of counting
the miles to forever
broken old crosses –
lacey white wings
it seems but a moment
backward forgiving
to a place just the same –
starting again
hands held aloft
pleading with heaven
for one more tomorrow –
another amen
a quiet surrender
of midnight
and morning –
is washed from the sun
by a river of tears
recalled at the end
as a time ne’er forsaken –
when love glowed the path
of our way
back to here
