do you remember
crickets playing
well into the night
an oasis formed of dreams
hiding there
granny’s blanket
folded –
a carrier of wish
for days
I pulled starlight from
my hair

when war is come
and I have prayed
the fathers intervene
to carve a crystal fountain
from the seas
healing hearts
and easing every memory
of loss –
taking back of hurts
we fell between
as tears aligned
with rumor –
sons by sons are grieved
a disillusioned truth
returned as stone
I will sit the night
every night
until the end becomes
a place to start
with pieces left
of home

how much of me
is written –
to the rafters
of your heart
a purple painted
flower
faded now
what of words
I worried with –
were washed out
by the flood
letters set to sail
beyond your touch
what of ink
has stained your hands
worn your fingers blue
a rhyme
no longer worthy
but to curse
were there pages
still to ponder –
moments meant to keep
safe within the
memory
of verse

were for this
my final grace –
I held my breath
and waited
the passing down
of consequence –
falling on my knees
wanting for another place
silently to fill
lungs no longer thirsty
for the light
every best
intention
as yet tho not enough –
to starve the flame
where destiny is moored
for this
a prayer is given
without worry
for the cost –
the taking back of heaven
– dreams
I’m fondest of
a hero when the story
fell apart –
come for this
a morning more
to rise

come to me
to the fringe of dusk
when all I’ve known
is the way
to you –
where ne’er regret
is welcomed –
the velvet of his brow
his penchant
to distract
from all that matters
now
come to me
lay with me –
beneath a sky of ancients
lovers undecided
every one
breathe in me your story
grant my heart
the map –
faded lines
let these fingers bleed
come to me
a memory
come to me afraid
as proof of my good fortune
you might be
near as dawn approaches
with but a sigh
between
the shadow where you waited
come to me
. . .

had i waited
on the spring
to gather me
for home –
the scent of winterberries
on the vine
had i held my breath
a moment here
to let the snowfall melt
bare feet
where roses grew
one morning
you were mine
as shadows burned
to daylight
dancers on the floor
pages from our story
to defend
when recalled
the times we wasted
waiting one more
kiss –
leaves became
the color of the sun
destined
by the cold
to fall again

by home another way, letting go, life, love, memory, returned, time

once before
i grieved your loss
seventeen
and falling
were home a way –
i’d find you
just the same
tucked between
the shadows
waiting
open arms
a memory
of memories –
reclaimed
make of me
tomorrow
strip my longing
bare
map the constellation
of my soul
steal my heart
take my breath –
claim
this sacred land
cleave of me
every truth
I know

we were lanterns
caught in webs –
sparkled
with the dew
a righteous moon
made jealous
by the dawn
flames where wishes
landed –
near to places
once we lay
silence
falling stars
we counted on
we were sparks
within the heavens –
seeking love
we would
become
