had you asked
I might have told –
might have willed my lips
to speak
to whisper of a future
not so far along were we
promise met
with something more –
a universe to save
pressed you to my heart
til I unwillingly
forgave
wayward
constellations
taking comfort with the stars
carved our names
as ancient flames
entrusted
to the dark

come to me
to the fringe of dusk
when all I’ve known
is the way
to you –
where ne’er regret
is welcomed –
the velvet of his brow
his penchant
to distract
from all that matters
now

come to me
lay with me –
beneath a sky of ancients
lovers undecided
every one
breathe in me your story
grant my heart
the map –
faded lines
let these fingers bleed

come to me
a memory
come to me afraid
as proof of my good fortune
you might be
near as dawn approaches
with but a sigh
between
the shadow where you waited
come to me

this day
of all others
this shift in the light
a sweet celebration
aligned with the night
I’m not much for promise
tears aren’t my style –
but as dark
became morning
I drifted a while
to far away summers
and sweet sunny days
when someone spoke softly
and someone remains
blessed by the memory
of a kiss
and a prayer –
of wishes made whole
by the stars

what longing
might I best defend
as distance
unsubstantial
winding roads
lines across between
rivers
here I left my tears
forests I surrendered
a mile or two
beyond this best I know
time has folded over
the map that is my heart
til nothing
short of silence
feels the same
garnered by permission
to go
as once I came
before the dawn
an ageless earth –
endless virgin seas
countless intersections
stars to see me home
memories
to grace the days
between

how I wish
I were immune
to the rising fault of tides
to the shift that
breaks my rhythm
sets my heart adrift
to the strangeness
born of midnight
a voice inside my head
books I’ve long forgotten
lay open on my bed
that I would
this dream remember
like the first
I held of you
when tides were low
moonlight fell
against the pines –
as life I didn’t know
I didn’t know –
a part of me
mistaken for another
left behind

as mornings
where the light is come
to spill across
my bed
faded cotton folded
holy praise

here the boards
are broken
tho one shall know
my steps –
a dance recalled to
memory that way

slanted doors
and rusted hinges
still I pull
you in
pressed against my ache
yesterday

of chances
I’ve forgotten
where I left my heart
who the stars
remember
to obey

had I loved
with something less
than all this heart
could hold –
measured my desire
by yesterdays
counted not the bounty
love was sure
to bring
at risk for loss
an ache so deep –
I could not turn away

the stars escape
this time of year –
and some
will never know
of ancients
where the windows stood –
eyes to catch the light
love resolved
the heart to overflow
