frame this horizon
with all I have witnessed
crowd to the corner
where heart meets to soul
bear me the weight
no more than a memory
of destiny traded
to a dream long ago

laundry and laces
cracked oatmeal glasses
parts given way
as collections laid bare
black and white stories
are telling without us
faded a photo
of a photo somewhere

who is that boy
at the edge of the smiling
where now his reasons
though lost once before
held by a longing
bigger than pardon
when left his horizon
my own to restore

. . .

thoughtyouhere

tis all I have
the best of me
given to this destiny
wherein I live
ten thousand lives
unsure of one –
one more
forever now
these hands are bent
as silence breaks
o’er moments spent
on lifetimes more
than I can see
ages without memory
exist forever
as just this one –
this only
always
best of me

how weary I
the seasons pass –
a burst of blush removed
beneath a sky
of thunderbirds –
above a birth of stone
silence weighs against me
as echoes fill the space
was once my heart
now my roots
have reached beyond the moment
beyond the mountainside
an orchard blooms
somewhere
within my name

I’m the eldest
of four –
the youngest to some
and ancient to babies unborn
my eyes are the darkest
my arms the strongest
and for verse
I’m the one
unwilling to fall
when nights grow dreary
and dreams are for saving
forever a moment –
imagined one day
a slow lullabye
as rain on the pines –
for years matter nothing
at all

trustme

i garnered
strength
tho my heart laid bare
when darkness came
and bound me there

in places far
from all I loved –
from all I’d sworn to be
into the shadows
heaven followed me

with something more
than pardon
a measure more than some
when bruised –
I found my weary soul
at home

touched by grace
I could not see –
by love I had not earned
beyond the touch
I’d waited –
was every truth
returned

eternal

Last Wednesday……not that long ago.

Last Wednesday, I received a call from my ex-sister-in-law. In a matter of just a few days, her husband had fallen, been admitted to ICU, been diagnosed with a failing liver, been given the prognosis that he would not recover, and been surrendered to the loving hands of hospice.

Friday was a long day but yesterday longer, and this morning, at the ripe age of sixty, he passed away.

I’ve had colds last longer than the time it took for a page to turn, and a new chapter to begin for his wife and his daughter who is expecting her first child – his first grandchild.

I reminded my friend numerous times over the last few of just how precious this time is, even at its absolute worst – it is a treasure that some never have and would give up everything in order to know.

It’s a last chance to say everything that matters, to hear everything that matters. To grieve, to heal, to gather…..

Her faith is strong.

I am reminded (again) that (as a rule) we do not have the luxury of keeping our own clock, and like it or not, eventually our days will be done. We know not when, nor would we wish to.

As hard as this time already, I believe it is the moving on that wears the harshest. I imagined her returning home today and opening the fridge on a leftover salad from last week, the remnants of an ice tea not finished, socks in the dryer, shoes beside the door, carkeys on a kitchen counter. It is that which closes around us – the resumption of a life made smaller.

Yet, even in the remembering, we are blessed….. ❤

let me know
when life is come
and started new
without
the warmth that was
a kiss that knew
the way to ease
my longing

in my dreams

for this I waited —
never frightened by your touch
a lifetime spent returning home —
has taken
way too much

– loving you for reasons
you may never
understand…
the universe of you and I —
a love without demand

beyond the twilight —
shadows gather from the past
— moments never left behind
tho never meant to last

a jealous moon
once listened in
on stories left unspoken
no room for talk of what might be —
or promises unbroken

for this I waited —
for ten thousand more
I would –
what light was
never meant for light —
is seldom understood…

whatever is
will always be —
and nonetheless for time between
what evermore
was left that day —
in shadows
of a dream

friend

plant me
in the warmest spot
where sunlight spills to earth
face me north
and spread my branches
wide
sing that I might
recognize
the ancient rites of wind
that I might feel
the whispers
sweet glad tidings
of the night

snare me
with your ribbons
your cares of yesterday
keep me
as the place you come
to pray
in silence
let me witness
the musings of your soul –
dress me up
with stories
never told

share me
with rememberings
of once a noontide kiss
a late night tear
when no one knew
to listen
a moonlight dance
of sweet embrace
welcoming your sighs
as branches bent
to shield you
from the echoes
of goodbye

wondering

beyond
the reach of always
where questions
often hide
tis there you love –
as wings above
the tide

how many
are the lives between
the first
the last and then –
a place
we’ve yet to understand
awaits our time
again

I wonder
when the moon is filled
do you linger with
its rise
across the page
of ages past –
to sit atop
the sky

sailing

my days
ten thousand windows
pressed against the sun
another time
forgotten now the way
where mornings burst
in red and shadows –
paper hyacinth
lavenders while sleeping
I returned –
to watch the world beginning
beneath an ancient dawn
where once before
you urged me dream
again
