notfar

along these shores
forever walks
a sailor not forgotten –
strands beneath a winter sail
make his passing true
stories of deliverance
tales of wealth and sorrow
dreams to sink beneath the waves
the rest to float away

but on another bank
there sometimes stands
a maiden gift with promise
words worn through
by circumstance
I swore I’d never cry

life is passing slowly
the waves of time are falling –
and he still sails
come home
remember this –
remember me
the keeping of your compass
grains of sand adrift upon the sea

come again
leave her arms –
returning to the river
the ocean cries –
o please return to me
cast aside your tired oars
and step out on forever
I’ll watch the tide –
and walk the shores for you

Author’s Note:  Originally written in 2009 but lost in a folder of drafts (and waves).

somewhere storming

hope was born on a windy day
at two p.m.
your sudden smile
illuminated the fog
of my ailing soul
heartache was an ever darkening bruise
that starlight could never heal…
your words still try to work miracles
but you disappear as often
as moonlight on a stormy night
and through the ebb and tide of my need
you ride the waves of my salvation
like a pirate
caught between lust for rich horizons
and a part-time philosopher
in love with ideals

scarlet cups
where heaven hides
in open hands
green and hungry

I’ll be home
wait the morning –
dim with ease
the winter lights
above the door
where boards are twisted
where here
was last
I held your breath

am I some kind of crazy
I wonder sometimes
as I devour
what’s left
of your leaving

luckies and lipstick
walnuts and wine
who would dare say
there’s something
not right

with the way
we were going –
the ways that we came
from places too far
to begin
here again

to speak
without speaking
to know just the same
of fire
not put out
by the passing
of days

you were the master
of all you could see
and I was a whisper
born of the breeze
you were the storm
that rocked me to sleep
I was the sound
of the trees

you were breath
beginning again –
the long sweet call
of the soul
I was a drink
of rivers to come
from mountain tops
did I roll

to find you

destined they said
but I dared believe
you were more
than a place I’d discovered
remembered me new

you were forever
and I was before

he spoke
of distant mornings
(a light she strained to see)
she wrote
of lowly purpose
filled with love
(and mystery)

he listened
as she listened
they talked
(and talked some more)
of the road
they passed together
another way
(sometime) before

he spoke
of ancient winters
(a field where brothers fell)
she spoke
in careful whispers
of a loss
she grieved (as well)

he cried
and she was tender
(in the catching of each tear)
she reached
to find him (waiting)
(with want
to have her) near

he stayed
(beyond the leaving)
lest she ever think
him gone
as she woke
beyond the darkness
a star
(for wishing on)

been found, grace, gratitude, home, it's what I do, life, love, memory, prayers, sorrow, tears, time, truth

homeofI

A couple of days ago, I was tempted by one of those Facebook confession postings. You know the type, where you input information relative to you and post it on your timeline so that others will learn more about you, but also be inspired to do the same on their timeline.

Sort of a chain letter for Facebook fans.

It started innocent enough –

Names you go by: Bobbie, Bob, Aunt Bob
Beer or Wine: Coffee

But the next point for input was ‘When’s the last time you cried?’

Now that’s a bit tricky. You see, I don’t truly view myself as much of a crier.  Though I feel things deeply, the tears I shed are pretty private and I am not sure that either (a) they would be perceived as such, or (b) the fact that my answer isn’t ‘yesterday’ would lead anyone to believe that I have no feelings.

That I would care about either of those last items is an entirely separate matter, and one worth pursuing at another writing.

However, it got me to thinking about the tears I do shed.

You see, I can’t start down my list of reasons to be sad without bumping into reasons for thankfulness and gratitude. I can’t think about how much I miss my daddy without thinking of all the wonderful moments we shared. One gets in the way of the other in a way I am not sure most would understand.

I can shed tears of gratitude, but not for my own personal loss because my loss is far outbalanced by my gain.

And such as it with most everything I might grieve. My tears aren’t of sorrow, and may not even be seen as tears of joy.

They are instead tears of having been found.

Yes, that’s it….. And the answer, ‘all the time’.

how seldom this
the beautiful
from which I beg release
nights to nurse
the darkness
without shame
whispers
started long ago
secrets let me tell
about the boy –
I dare not speak his name

or suffer bliss
a moment more
than death will take
of me
warmth to ease
the restlessness between
our first kiss
and forever –
illusion of a sort
lessons –
lest I wonder still
what of all love means
