these
are the verses
speaking my life –
too many more
I dare not complain
of the ways
I may go without saying
a word
breath I might find
has forgotten my name
– the smell
of blackberries
left on the vine

I will speak
while still with voice
the heart recalls a psalm
and strings
somewhere playing
I was there
another home
a distance more than this
than the way behind
remembered
stories dwell
within my blood
beckon from the page
truths that I’ve forgotten
how to tell

in a season for(giving)
of all that we’ve known
the essence of snow laden pines –
shadowy lovers
of reason resigned
to the wind out my window
words seeking rhyme
how many I wonder
as I have before –
what cost for a memory
leaves nothing to shame
choosing surrender
as the pathway to truth –
lingering silence
when words fall away
hands gently folded
now reach for the veil –
as a means to confession
solace of flight –
silver bells echo
backward to dreams –
bliss undeterred
by the night

comfort settles
at the edge of the floor
just below the joint
where the wall would meet
it’s enough to make you crazy
suffocation (I’ve heard it called)
a fog spreading (honey)
to every splintered board
every missing nail
touching – loving
warming intoxication
sweeter comfort
could not be – than this
erasing every past
every damaged heart
every far away
you dreamed of
trading places with worlds
you might have died for
(did you not)
til all you know (is this)
nothing more could be recalled
not even the moment
it happened
(a mist beyond the glass)
ready to run
you turned into the light
as easy then
(o it isn’t anymore)
now you wait
unable to move beyond
hurts you gave into
(inviting)
fog still burns you breathing
ache that knows your name
clings to every piece
of you remembered

stilled was I
a moment longer
than e’er my tender soul could spare
than e’er my heart
undone by breaking –
could find anew the will to bear
eternities
began and stranded
within the want for one more day
within the swell
of breath surrendered –
as promise come from faraway
a name returned –
from silent keeping
defies the watch of space and time
where once a kiss –
another waiting
as evidence of faith divine

it’s not so brutal
to remember –
not a distance yet to go
I close my eyes
and for a moment –
all I’ve loved
is all I know
it’s not the dream
that keeps me dreaming –
nor a prayer
when I’m alone
it’s not the days
I know will dwindle
til the stars
recall me home
something more
is meant for sharing
something I forgot to tell
how the mountains
sense our pleasure –
higher still
when loved we
well

last night
I dreamed in verses
pages as my skin
and you
an ancient desk
upon the porch
looking out on summer
where every breath is slowed –
lines were caught
and whispered
to the dark

save me your words
the rest of your story
breathe me
to breath
steady and slow
the taste
of a poem –
verses made mention
rhyme i’d forgotten
to tell you
i know
leave me
to dreaming
slipped between pages
inkstained impressions
passed into
life
grace me the ending
one more everafter
breath of your breath –
the psalm
of your soul

lifetimes chiseled
a door between pines
was here
a heaven was left me
one time
closing my eyes
to evergreen dreams
washing my soul
in wonder
it seems
you remind me
of home
a place I belong
paths often tread
past beginning
words I have lost
to the wearing
of days
yet here
in the woods
they remain

today
was almost gone
before I thought of you –
what dream
have you been chasing
all this time
might again
the skies align
with lights much older than
the ways we’ve known –
when leaving us
behind
to wonder
what of days to come
I won’t recall your eyes
or the sweet embrace
of words
the same as mine
