from the silken green
of sleeping –
a night where stars are freed
swimming where your eyes
were met with mine

trading lace and story
for another
other time
witness to my pleading
come to me –

let my heart be broken
I won’t grieve
for lives between
tis only this –
reminding me of home

leave your box
of letters
just outside my door
teach me how to fly
let me fall

stay the night
stay til morning –
breathe my name aloud
as trade for one more kiss
a flannel dream

keep within your promise
heaven e’er you wake
beyond this night
of waiting –
come to me

. . .

broken fences, easy as I, enough, faith, gravel roads, home, it's what I do, life, love, memory, time, writing in the dark

come the morning
of redemption –
city lights
to fade your doubt
for every time
another came
and I was left without

breath no longer easy
was a plead for me
to stay
tho I couldn’t hear
I wouldn’t hear
words you’d never say

for every life
you promised
another perfect place –
an empty barn
a broken fence
memories retraced

to kiss this ground
and cleave my heart in two
been buried
more than once –
beside the river
next to you

shadows slide
on maple floors
while someone that I knew
remembers me
from other times –
a lover passing through

the worst is done
the right made wrong –
and who am I
for asking –
will the crops be gone
before the frost
is come

faraway
so faraway
and where we’ll be
worth telling –
city lights
are faded now
to places faraway

would stay the sun
and block the path
from taking more to pay
the bills tomorrow
bargained for –
with love so far
away

beyond this restlessness
I feel –
there lies with you
a solace
of solitude perceived
but few can say
how many times
your name was called
but not a sound was heard
as whispers of a songbird
never sang

if ever you should wonder
where on earth
I’ve come to be –
when given wings
which way the winds to blow
where were you
when I was lost –
to lay my body down
and begged your spirit
come –
as one to know

where to light
another night –
scattered thoughts to fade
flush the edges
first for one more time
as made for us
a place apart –
shall call this dreamer home
across a page
and given none to
rhyme

the same as then
you are at last –
my seasons soft returning
red and yellow leaves
as love to will
quiet as a Sunday morn
warm as July nights
if ever life is come
my breath to still

was a lover
trading verse for time
a poet without want
for rhyme
a keeper
born of whispers
few can understand
how it is the night pretends
to know
how it is
reason fails
to justify her love
the pain that comes of dying
with nothing left to say
how it is light returns
just when it seems a loss
to gift her time
she thought was burned
away

age, close enough to touch, lessons, love, memory, seasons, time, truth, warmth

do you miss the ache
of my hand in yours
another day –
my head against your heart
when darkness falls
unwilling
to the soul that waited long
will you feel my love
settled with you
there

as more than touch
more than breath returning
more than words
rewritten to your skin
wherever time
was promised
let it be as it has been
a place
where love remembered
wakes again

feel the warmth
this tender ache
my hand within your hand
a falling rain
of memories persist
where once
is still –
a dream recalled
my head against your heart
awaiting us a lifetime
such as this

allowing, courage, grief, home, knowing what I know, memory, time, truth, what might have been

Today’s devotion was one that I needed (tho I find I need almost all of them in some way or another). It was about grief, but not grief in the traditional way you think of it – as grieving over something once had and lost. It was grieving of another kind – grieving for what might have been.

In the devotional, one woman explored her grief for a life that might have been had she not miscarried a child – her life and the child’s. And it made me think to the children I’ve never had, but also to other lives, some lived through word or in memory – but lives I grieve the same.

Take time, wherever you are to think on those things – even if just for today. There’s another life that misses you, other arms that reach out within the silence. Do not dwell in that place for life continues regardless. But it would be a shame to not allow them their space, to allow the tears that you’ve dared to cry alone.

when I’ve forgotten
how it was –
or what of hope allowed
when years have gone
with all I dreamed about
let not my heart
be fractured
along the same sweet lines
where once I loved
my love shall be
in breath –
no longer mine

in the swell of the tide
a breath before rising –
in the roll of the sands
neath the shore
I’ve noticed the rivers
run deeper than blood –
and the trees
taller still than before

I’ve reckoned the sun
how she leans to the right
when no one is watching
but me
how she warms to my skin
as home she remembers –
a lantern set high
on the sea

sometimes morning
awakens the night –
with whispers of promise undone
prickled by weeds
berries and blossom –
fireflies skimming
the pond

bitterly sweet
scattered transgressions –
as who for another
moment would trade
dust from a memory
of life as we knew –
to wait for a night
in the shade

I am the road
an evening sunset –
left to burn
against your brow
I am the memory
of other summers –
where life began anew
somehow

I am breath
I am October –
a field of reds
where heaven grew
I am words
tho never uttered
I am life
returned for you

another me
as seasons follow
within the count
of death to days –
I am love
I will not falter
where’re the heart
my truth remains

get me to singing
like some old guitar
a bit of boards straining
for tune –
the one you played
remember that time –
chords and crescendos
of me wanting you

get me
to forever
we swore there would be
feather beds
wrapped
with cotton sheets
long nights passed
with but a whisper between –
summer smiles
and kisses –
an old porch swing

get me
to sunrise
without worry for sleep –
questions
for all this love means
move me
to make you –
these lips to beg you
stay
silent reminders
to breathe

. . .

friends, grace, knowing, life, love, memory, morning, seeing in the dark, stars, time, truth, universe, wisdom

It’s true that I have nearly 175 items in my WordPress draft folder, and on days when I need to, those provide a comfort or a kick-start to other words. I considered them first thing today, while I searched for the warmest socks in an over-stuffed basket. But when I got to my desk, I found something else, and there…..other words that needed no push in becoming.

I’m convinced that it’s not indigestion or a storm or anything quite so mundane that wakes me in the night. When it happens, I roll over, look at the clock and typically go right back to sleep. But not without smiling at the reassurance that I take in this simple (though some might call infuriating) occurrence.

While there are vast numbers of people who understand the complexity (and simplicity) of the universe, few put absolute faith in the fact that it is constantly working for us (almost like a personal assistant type of universe). That’s my ‘belief’ – that the universe is up all night trying to figure out just what I need and when I need it in order to make sure that I get it.

So, when I wake up at 4:08 and can’t be sure why, I am confident that someone somewhere has spoken my name. It’s also why sometimes at 2:03 a.m., I wake and speak other names. Yeah, I know you’re shaking your head (or some of you are). And that’s well enough, but you’re surely missing out on an amazing part of this life (your life).

But back to today. What you know so far involves socks and waking up at 4:08 a.m. Not too exciting even to a boring story.

But once I arrived at my desk, I had a message through messenger from a dear friend, who, in the midst of his two o’clock run from Houston to Dallas, was stopping for breakfast at some ‘hole in the wall’ diner just outside of Austin. And over eggs and coffee, he thought of me and wondered what my day held in store. His note came in at 4:12 a.m.

Think what you want. That crazy girl in Tennessee couldn’t possibly be onto something. But be advised that the crazy girl in Tennessee is definitely onto something, and likely has more help with life before she opens her eyes than you get all day from your not so ‘weebie-weebie’ sources.

In the meantime, my expectations for the day ahead just shot up, and I smile now, grateful for the universe, for Hank, and for places that serve hot coffee and fresh eggs when needed most. Somehow, even in the midst of crazy, the universe remembers what we prayed for and what we need most (even when we don’t realize how strong the need).

The universe remembers us home.

had I laid awake
a moment more –
to wish upon a star
called his name
aloud into the dark
gathered soft as morning
as light across
my room
surrendered to remembrance
these pieces of a dream
where I am still made humble
by the moon

had I drifted
as nightbirds
sang of trees so far away
of lifetimes
I have no excuse to know
to waltz
along the shoreline
in strands of blue and gold
to wake with sand
pressed sweetly
to my soul
