from pages torn
a story telling
of times before I cannot say
the journey through
or where I found you
somewhere lost along the way

of fields and flowers
dirt poor mornings –
with honeysuckle pillows there
I knew you
in the sweetest way –
by moments scattered
everywhere

of promise shared
and others buried –
to make a fire of bodies worn
by something more than everafter –
seasons cleft
another born

into a place
of resurrection –
names the least of all we knew
how it was
the soul remembered
the road I took
in finding you

nearme

Now and then, I’m reminded of the unique wonder that is inherent to our living, loving, and journey through the number that becomes our days.

And while most travels are the same, others can vary based on age, our place in the world, and even the area where we are born to.

Just yesterday, I made the trip to see my mother, some thirty minutes down the road. Along the way, I passed a place I have overlooked hundreds of times, but this time was different. I noticed a cluster of trees and just as I passed, I realized there was a worn down path – a road (less traveled) that navigated between them, through them.

And just like that, I was at another place of my life. I was 18.

While I don’t for one minute think that ‘parking’ is unique to the south, I think that every place we find love is unique in some way – even if only unique to us (every kiss, the first, the sweetest ÷ the only).

In the south (or at least in my part of the South), we would never spend a Saturday night in the backseat of a car when the option of a blanket of clover beneath and stars above is so readily available.

could I tell you
the truth of this –
of secrets writ to skin
of nights
not left to injury or scar
the memory returning us
not so weary
not so far
to fields where clover blooms
beyond the stars

. . .

easy ~

a long looking back
to a moon
o’er my shoulder
to eyes that haven’t changed
though days spread
between
the first and forever
of an almost forgotten
kiss for another
knew me back when
life was just starting
love was this easy
and you were
uncertain
just dreaming
of me

foreverstill

in this faraway moment
time is not erased
each grain of every wooden plank
calls out to and from centuries
of worship
the chipped paint
hymn to solitary prayer
over green fields
winds blow
with secrets common
to each faithful soul
forgotten
yet remembered each year
springtime cannot touch this sanctity
and winter dares not destroy its promise
summer has parched temple lips
leaving words fragile on autumn’s
altars of color
yet nothing
has dimmed such beauty
nor reasons
that made it live

in places began
from the coming back home
as distance created
a line between stars
where light was suspended
eternities true
as would wait for the sound
a pause between words
the still of
a kiss
remembered somehow
tho times they are different
lives into life
a crossing of seasons
names without verse
a taking of all
but a promise
to love

waitingmehome

with hope
that bears not reason
some other time
awaits
as shadows to the leaving –
a stranger
at the gate

gathers yet
these orchids
we planted on our way
and worries not
the chill
of yesterday

of human hands
immortal hearts
wear true
the soul to soul –
memories of presence
in living
shall unfold

soft against
these fading lights
– to know
because we feel
a moment
unsurrendered
resolves to hold us
still

rememberedmehome

I’ve heard
them tell
of summer storms
beyond the reach
of winters –
of places where the spring
has gone to stay
wrapped around
a bitter bark –
falling into sorrow
a time to keep
of lifetimes
yesterday

held us here
with promise –
with want for one last time
a life reserved
if ever fate allowed
given will to gather
lest we choose
another way –
beholding not to
consequence
somehow

changing
as were seasons
passing us to years –
golden crowns
with ribbons furling grey
wherein our faith
is measured –
a truth
we carry still
of times we lived
for this –
another day

. . .

the same as night ~

tearsarefalling
might I help you
to remember –
of moments (all but gone)
how sweet the rain
(of words)
against the moon

of graces given
heart and soul –
(and when will you
return)
to chase the chill
another rhyme to bloom

as whispers
pass unspoken
the same
(most every time)
a promise scattered far
on ancient wings

willing us to wonder
did you know
(how could you know)
of birds
the same as night
ten thousand sing

their way across
a paper sky –
(once you told me why)
tho everything
(my everything)
has changed

deeper now –
the places kept
are tempered
into bone –
with all I know –
(familiar
falls) the rain

. . .

ways uncertain ~

comfort

did we know
of ways uncertain –
as paths we cleared
between
of rivers wide
and trees against the sky
dew had fallen
somewhere –
into the baby grass
promise made of whispers
morning lies

the way to becoming ~

of the places
we passed –
on our way to becoming
there were times
taken back
for a while to reflect
as sunlight burned holes
in the feet of our longing
and eyes searched the shadows
for nights barely done –

poems laid out
in uneven patterns
lessons forgiving
each name said aloud
mysteries turned by our faith in forever
in moments unspoken
given voice
by the clouds

red clay horizons
and blue opal brushes
twilight and words without shame
cactus grew wild
at the edges of memory
as somewhere
the skies painted
pictures of us –

in ribbons of
bluebird and flame
