missingyou

my aging skin
is the color of maps
of clay
somewhere in georgia
used to be
sometimes –
i remember that way
the fresh scent of clover
the perfume
of hay
places my skin
was touched by another
kissed by lips
the sun
to discover
nothing but whispers
as a breath on my shoulder
the etching of maps
to trace you
back home

tis not for fame
this heart returns –
for secrets left untold
– a souvenir of longing
a solace
never sold

to start anew
denied the past
where I was loved
before
a place I scarce remember –
wills me home
once more

to remember –
of moments (all but gone)
how sweet the rain
(of words)
against the moon

of graces given
heart and soul –
(and when will you
return)
to chase the chill
another rhyme to bloom

as whispers
pass unspoken
the same
(most every time)
a promise scattered far
on ancient wings

willing us to wonder
did you know
(how could you know)
of birds
the same as night
ten thousand sing

their way across
a paper sky –
(once you told me why)
tho everything
(my everything)
has changed

deeper now –
the places kept
are tempered
into bone –
with all I know –
(familiar
falls) the rain

for moments
I have traveled –
lost my way
sometimes –
and swam in silver depths
beyond the pond

wishes of reflection
as streamers curled the night
– pardon me
the way they spelled
your name

open arms
and we began
somewhere east of eden
a blanket made
of flannel – crossed
with pale

once or more
the lying left
in curses by the fence
as tresses braided wheat
into a smile

hand me downs
and where I’ll be
should e’er the taking
bring you –
home another way
forgotten truce

maps betrayed
for tracing –
down every rural road
– spare the wheel
and let your soul
decide

of roads
the not so traveled
were signs we knew the way
illuminated crosses
of goodbye
silhouettes and arms
extended –
get for me a ride

I long for places
never made the map

breathed into existence
by the way you said
their names –
weathered lace
against my burning skin
told me once we’d travel
out beyond the light
but held onto –
lest heaven steal away

mark the place
was here we passed
chasing some old dream –
I’ve spent a lot of time
without your eyes
staring back
from dusty roads
creekbeds hidden now –
bridges passing over
sweet refrain
