divine intimacy, life, love, memory, nature, souvenirs, steadfast, still, truth

when passions
are rendered
and the last starling sailed –
when all I recall
of the summer
we loved –
is the flush of your skin
melded with mine
a view of the sky
through your eyes

as gifted this poet
moments so clear –
words without hope
to describe
the way your smile lingered
as coffee was poured
night making sense
of the day

when time
is negated
for sake of my heart
the curve of the moon
as he sleeps
when all i have left
of your voice
in the dark –
is passed as a wing
through the trees

. . .

consequence of light ~

consequence, light, love, memory, returned to home, truth

were love the same
as yesterday –
took you by surprise
a sideways glance
the consequence
of light

had not your heart been
propped against
the memory of dust
your lips with ache
for all I had
to say

a song
that has not played
but in your arms –
I remember well
the swell
of violins

. . .

the time it took to find ~

death, life, love, memory, moments where eternity lives, prayer, resurrection, time, truth

would that longing
understand –
the ways by which we loved
ten thousand sighs –
rivers to the sea
should ever grace
be given for
the time it took
to find
or chapters dedicated
to our pleas
will history remember
every whisper
every touch –
will canyons remain empty
as proof of us –
when dreams are lost
to counting
nights beneath the chill
as darkness comes
to break our hearts again
what of love will
intercede
when light is turned
to stone –
reminders of the places
love has been

life, longing, love, memory, remains of another day, seasons, time, truth, what we keep

how far
from Spring to wander
I can scarce
recall perfumes –
wafts of honeysuckle
sacred vine
days beneath the sun
echoes of another
spilled into
a morning
just as this
boughs already emptied
tho memory persists
wherever now our secrets
fill the wind

age, gifts, home, journey, life, love, memory, seasons, time, truth, what we keep

were there signs
we failed to notice
edges faded gray
words we lost in speaking
as hearts for others
paid

other lives
we left forsaking
what might be our last goodbye
what might wait
beyond the sunset
coral wings
against the night

without fault
without remembrance
lest our days be counted less
than a moment
life was traded –
soul for soul
breath for breath

were there signs
we gave each other
memory carved into the soul
touching places
we were lovers –
coming home
and letting go

breaths between eternities, death, life, love, memorial, memory, moments, soul, story, time

I recently attended a memorial service for my aunt, who has spent the last nine months in some state of ‘coming home’ – from Salt Lake City to Tennessee. It was a wonderful time for sharing stories and memories. And while we might have shared some of them back in March, I found an advantage in the delay – memories and stories unencumbered by the immediate weight of grief.

For me, it meant I could share funny stories without breaking down, speak without a catch in my voice. In response to one story of my uncle’s driving, I noticed at least ten people actually in tears from laughing so hard. My aunt would have loved it!!!!

The minister whispered to me afterward, “I’m growing quite fond of these delayed events.” Maybe it’s the storyteller in me, but I believe it’s because they come at a time when memories aren’t part of what breaks us, but rather part of what is saving us. Perhaps it’s another lesson in perspective, viewing truths through a more compassionate eye.

Personally, I think we could use a bit more of that.

when blue
my ashes fall
on meadows far from here
or drift atop a wave
deep and grey
remember me
another time –
as a wind I came
to you
whispers of forever
given you to save

. . .

no say ~

all I know, all we've known to love, find me, life, memory, still, truth

i have no say
in destinies
chance another wrought
no proof
you held my hand
or kissed my lips
as lifetimes felt
beneath your touch
eternities denied
as breath where words
are tangled
love persists

a page or two
folded now
held against my breast
tethered to a moment
we remain
beyond the hold
of circumstance
within the reach
of dreams
a sigh to wear
the memory
of your name

i have no say
in destinies
chance another wrought
no proof
you held my hand
or kissed my lips

. . .

“I will look for you in every lifetime and love you there.”

becoming, knowing, life, love, memory, soul memory, when I've forgotten you

when I’ve forgotten
help me learn –
let my hands grow wise again
let these feet
recall the path
where love began

let my tongue
be resurrected by a name
I know by heart
let my touch
seek recollection
in your arms

when I’ve forgotten
let me love you
like the first
the last
the one
let me learn anew
the story –
not yet done

. . .

courage, grace, life, love, memory, messenger, soul, spirit, time, trust, truth, understanding

when hearths
are warmed
by who we are
beyond the wait
where lanterns sway
beneath an ancient dark
evermore to waste

as time
we could not give
locks already failed
secrets bound together
by the ways
of which we came

had you known
of truths I carried –
a chair beside my bed
a hope
already seated
with my soul
leaving yet to suffer
memory to fill

save for me
a place you love
to love

. . .

took the place of memory ~

were it mine
to offer
a future undefined
light
to ease the edges
of your night
had I wings
the ancient kind
to spread across the skies
might I hold you
captive then –
bound by this
desire

were it now
a life resumed –
come to steal my sleep
took the place
of memory –
burned within a dream
were we more
than once declared
a sigh beneath the timbers
arms still ache
with missing
my heart
was yours –
remember
