stirring

it was October
when words fell as easy
as leaves letting go
touch burned far deeper
than hands holding so
tears
of sorrow
of gratefulness
merged into a river of living
when she understood
all that she had dared to know
more than a moment
could hold –
a lifetime replaced
by the moist reflection
of love in his eyes
a recollection
she had waited to remember –
how distance wasn’t about miles
or the times between –
but rather a sigh between breaths
eternity passing in the hush
of whispers to hope
in the years to follow
it wasn’t the colors she would recall
or the longing just beneath her skin
it was the sweet perfume
of maple and cedar –
the lingering memory
of home

. . .

a moment spared ~

hopesanddreams

i’ve made my peace
with living
deciding what to keep
tis love i count
around and ’round
when falling off to sleep

i can’t abide
a moment spared
lest it be divine
i won’t be bent the burden
of truth
that isn’t mine

the day may dawn
tho i don’t see how
for sorrow and regret
let ne’er my tender heart reside
in pain
i’d best forget

what memories
would hurt invade
o’er those most surely blessed
– would cast a shadow
o’er my days
and curse my soul
at rest

. . .

lost to days we never knew ~

sparse

was another side
of Sunday
when I found your hand
in mine
I was sitting over coffee
with the times
shedding tears for someone else
passed just yesterday
counted well the years
I threw away
a man
without a daughter
a bride denied her groom
a boy
who filled his story
much too soon
orchids bloom for every soul
years beneath the dawn
lost to days
we never knew –
this tearful hour
would come

. . .

a kiss beneath the fall ~

neartohome

from death
the heart is blinded
to loves
we loved before
a promise made one summer’s eve –
the vow of evermore

what memories
would grieving bear
the wrath of consequence
a moment unremembered –
when nothing else
makes sense

how much of this
was traded
for a kiss
beneath the fall
how much became of destiny
was ne’er a choice
at all

daybreak

I am breath
against the branches
light across the green
ten thousand other mornings
save for thee

I am waves
upon the water –
tiny shells beneath your feet
warmth that keeps a memory
of home

I am the first you know
before your dreams
are slipped beyond your sleep
a sigh that bears the name
of destiny

I am the reason
you’ve forgotten –
as a nightbird
I will sing
of blues you only dreamed
remember me

. . .

alone

moonlight glows
ruby red
upon these paths of clay
a giant sleeps
beneath the coming day
dreams are without pardon –
a name upon my lips
reminds me of a lifetime
I surrendered
for a kiss

tellme

there are whispers
of remember
in the gentle tide of leaves –
a dancing of the trees
beneath an august night
as feathers sweeping skyward
on wings of sacred light

there are songs
and there are moments
from which our songs are weaved
– music held together
by the stars

lovers wrapped in make believe
waking with the dawn –
wishes born of loving
falling down

story still becoming
the vessel meant for dreams
verses where a forest grieves
with plans to get us back
into the heart
where love remains
the source of everything

. . .

beyond the reach of us ~

wherestillIknow

he thought i was an angel
the evidence of grace –
an evermore he daring
dreamed –
with ink to score
the page

he warned
of time and certain tears –
I pretended not to know
of days beyond the reach of us
a place too far
to go

he pressed to me
and I to him –
in curs’ed rite
of storied bliss
recalled another coming home
with vows of tenderness

. . .

as easy then ~

sweeter

comfort settles
at the edge of the floor
just below the joint
where the wall would meet
it’s enough to make you crazy
suffocation (I’ve heard it called)
a fog spreading (honey)
to every splintered board
every missing nail
touching – loving
warming intoxication

sweeter comfort
could not be – than this
erasing every past
every damaged heart
every far away
you dreamed of
trading places with worlds
you might have died for
(did you not)

til all you know (is this)
nothing more could be recalled
not even the moment
it happened
(a mist beyond the glass)
ready to run
you turned into the light
as easy then
(o it isn’t anymore)
now you wait
unable to move beyond
hurts you gave into
(inviting)
fog still burns you breathing
ache that knows your name

clings to every piece
of you remembered

. . .

what has always been ~

when I see you again

when day returns to shadow
and dust –
resigns to dust
when words are sworn to silence
as treasure into rust
when the last goodbye
is spoken
in a language few will know
when vows are broken
as truth unfurling
at this quiet letting go
the soul decides
of stories cleft –
an ache for what has always been
when the name we wore
in living
becomes a whisper
on the wind
