you wondered
who I was
and why I came
from places
long imagined
but never said
aloud
in passing –
lest your fingers
be tempted by the red
to begin
an undertaking –
an explorer
undecided where to land
how many streams
for crossing
might delay
your sweet return
to a place
you had forgotten
how to be

I am
the child of a living God
the essence of a garden
I am the blood
of ten thousand tribes
made to one
I am the breath of heaven
a river rush with tears
a light denied
the limits
of the sun

I am
willing to be broken
so that I might rise again
deciding as I will
my destiny
I am not afraid
of falling
mine are wings
of love divine
I will lean into
and wait
a certain wind

how much of fate
was mine to choose
evidence the ways
folded maps –
another truth betrayed
how many stars
were broken
from their path across the night
fell as wishes –
one more turn
at life

what of this
I understand –
how much I learn anew
without a moment here
being loved by you
as wishes wait
a time
a place to be
here the same was I
seeking destiny

had I more
than stars for wishing
years of standing still
the memory
of falling to the sea
where I slept
within a sunrise
as ten thousand came before
swimming in your eyes
rescue me

had I will
to run or follow –
a step or two behind
beyond the pull
of destiny or sky
tempted by a promise
truth would see me home
lest I wander with
this mystery
called life

had I courage
for surrender –
death to stave again
carried up as leaves
to lay me down
had I faith
to live another life
were this my only plea
come to me
with arms
to wrap around

how I wish
I were immune
to the rising fault of tides
to the shift that
breaks my rhythm
sets my heart adrift
to the strangeness
born of midnight
a voice inside my head
books I’ve long forgotten
lay open on my bed
that I would
this dream remember
like the first
I held of you
when tides were low
moonlight fell
against the pines –
as life I didn’t know
I didn’t know –
a part of me
mistaken for another
left behind

pressed
into the pages
here my story lies
a sacred bloom
once crimson
sweet perfume
I close my eyes
and once again
rest beneath the boughs
spied upon
by eyes in search
of mine
melody of nature
music of the trees
ancients raise
a silver canopy
to catch the light
surrendered
by ten thousand
dreamed before
spirits I have spoken
here my heart
a blossom as a kiss
resolved –
as dear my own to taste
the fragile scent
of memory
remains

there is no
left
no always right –
just a blur
where things went wrong
a moment you were here –
then you were
gone

balanced
among strangers
for eyes in search
of mine –
a hunger so familiar
seems my only
every time

beyond the blur
of wandering –
a wrong forgotten now
right returned
unnoticed
and I was saved
somehow

from slumber
I am taken –
lest my dreams
return for me
lest my covers ache
the essence
of my sin
when the moon is perched
along the southern eve
let him weep
let him find me distant
find me gone
succumb to all was
missing –
surrendered not to fate
one more day
I dare not spend it now
steal me from
the cool embrace
of sheets just off the line
shatter my
allegiance
to the night
