as easy as breathing, christmas, confession, life, live, poetry, rambling, sometimes, writing in the dark

was making plans
for one more life
when you found me
spun me round
like a rainbow
falling
drunken path
flooding the pasture
burning my skin
with the way
you looked thru
the way you made love
feel like
always
was nothing
we’d ever want back
a breath for christmas
one more every time
i would awake
in a trance
of learning to be
tho i couldn’t quite
count
the stars
i could drown in your eyes
a life resurrected
as you held out
your hands –
opened your arms
to surround

along the way
Christmas twinkles
in strings of red and green
starlight scattered
softly o’er the snow
and in the face
where once the moon
remembered why we came
angels tip their
golden wings
below

silence spills
o holy night
and I am lost for words
to ease the ache
I find in everything
days my heart has worried
are taken back again
by One who waits
the evening bell
to ring

backtohome

was a time
I might have fretted –
December days
without a call
a moment of concession
longing miles –
none at all

with a whisper of
remember me
another place
where time began
how funny now
my grieving weighs
each start to start again

January soon will pass
within a numbered
swell of tides
to ease the ache
of missing –
a voice
where love
abides

. . .

thank God –

A woman waited in line just a few people ahead of me. She carried three packages for mailing.

The clerk said it would cost $53 to guarantee their delivery by Christmas. The cost was too high so she inquired the price to guarantee delivery on only one of them.

She explained that December 25th was her father’s birthday.

The clerk sighed ‘what a bummer’. ‘What a bummer to have a birthday on Christmas. You’d only have one gift.’

As the customer dug for her wallet the clerk commented, ‘I don’t think I know anyone who was born on Christmas day.’

My voice echoed through the crowded space –

‘Thank God I do.’

professing love for me_edited

what of words
one blessing fails –
a choir can hardly sing
to tell of grace
in all I’ve known –
a loving solstice
brings

as voices blend
in whispering –
the ransom of my will
to a season saved for mary
candles reaching –
higher still

red and virgin
blossoms bleed
beneath an old and crooked tree
verses of ten thousand psalms
– professing love
for me

I wonder
though not so often
how sweetly the path was grown
another way
from all I dreamed –
returns my soul
to home

sleigh bells
and whispers
of Christmases past
who I was then
but a sigh barely heard
ribbons and snowfall
a sweet welcome in
moments together
a song
without words –

though time has a way
of deciding our truth
love keeps all
we’ve forgotten to be –
a place of beginning
carries us still
as a candle burns long
in the heart’s
memory

You’ve heard it before. It seems everyone is asked to complete the sentence from time to time – even as the final moments sneak by on Christmas eve.

I personally love the answers. Some wait for a certain movie to play (It’s a Wonderful Life, my favorite) or they wait for snow, the first Christmas card, a call from across the miles. Regardless, for most, there is a trigger that pulls them (sometimes kicking) into the spirit of these days.

Last weekend, I spent an uncomfortable amount of time at Home Depot. People were beginning to think I worked there. In fact, I helped one lady by pushing her cart to the registers.

And while I am rarely without the Christmas spirit (even in June), I was losing my taste for home renovation options!

But as I was searching for the appropriate aisle for molding, I realized the music had changed.  O, they were playing Christmas music, albeit most of it was what I refer to as ‘retail’ Christmas music. But then, on the aisle between hinges and paint thinner, it changed – Joy to the World began playing. It was only the music, but I recognized it immediately. It was enough….

I’ll admit that I am a terrible singer (and a worse dancer), but I couldn’t resist. I began singing and the more I sang, the louder I became, and the more I felt Christmas cooling in my bones.

From one aisle to the next, I sang……..the first verse and then again (the only verse I knew for certain the words).

Since then, a co-worker gave me a tiny picture frame ornament; another, a sand and driftwood candle; and still another – a new birdhouse (guess they’ll be moving out of the grill), feeder, and ten pounds of wild birdseed.

Just this morning, as I made the turn beside a church on my way to work, two does stopped in their morning walk to watch me (hey you).

I feel it everywhere, but right here (pointing to heart) the most. It’s in all I do – hope, faith, family, angels, my daddy, the Smoky Mountains, evergreen, music, and love (always love).

Christmas is come………and I was home!!!

Merry Christmas to you. May your heart be filled to overflowing.  Joy (sweet joy) to the world!

Evermore,
Bobbie

A Christmas reminder that sometimes we receive amazing
gifts when we’re expecting nothing more than baggage.

May your gifts surprise you.

Love,
Bobbie
